In 1817 Charlotte von Siebold received a doctorate in medicine at the University of Giessen, after the defence of her thesis on extrauterine pregnancy [offered here]. She thus became only the second woman in the German-speaking world to earn a doctorate in medicine (the first being Dorothea Erxleben, who earned her doctorate from Halle in 1754). Charlotte von Siebold was the daughter of Josepha and her first husband, who died when Charlotte was young. Josepha then married Damian von Siebold, a son of the physician Carl Caspar von Siebold. Josepha assisted Damian in the practice of medicine, and in 1815 Josepha was granted an honorary doctorate in medicine by the University of Giessen. In 1811 Charlotte went to Göttingen to study medicine with Friedrich Benjamin Osiander and in 1817 she received a doctorate in medicine at the University of Giessen. Charlotte von Siebold was present at the birth on May 24, 1819, of the baby who, in 1837, became Queen Victoria. She was also present at the birth on August 26, 1819, of Albert of Saxe-Coburg, who became Prince Albert, husband of Victoria, in 1840. Since Victoria and Albert were first cousins maybe it should not be surprising that Charlotte von Siebold attended the birth of both. To my knowledge this is the only publication by Charlotte von Siebold, whose full name was M. Th. [Marianne Theodore] Charlotte Heiland gen. von Siebold. 1. Omdat de Nederlanders nauwelijks van het kleine eilandje Deshima afmochten, was de vierjaarlijkse reis naar het hof van de shogun in Edo (600 km over land en 400 km over zee) voor von Siebold de enige gelegenheid om zelf Japan echt te leren kennen. / Dit boek is een Nederlandse vertaling van de complete versie uit 1897 van het Duitse reisverslag Reise nach dem Hofe des Sjogun im Jahre 1826 van Philipp Franz von Siebold. Von Siebold, arts en natuuronderzoeker, maakte in 1826 een bijzondere hofreis naar Edo (het huidige Tokio) als factorijarts op het eiland Deshima, de Nederlandse handelspost in Japan. Die hofreis was, omdat de Nederlanders doorgaans op Deshima en in Nagasaki waren beperkt, zijn kans om over land en zee grote delen van Japan te zien, contacten te leggen, kennis te vergaren van landschap, volk en natuur. Het verslag combineert reiservaring, observaties over de Japanse samenleving, cultuur, natuurhistorie en wetenschappen, en beschrijft zowel de fysieke reis (route, geografie, moeilijkheden onderweg) als de ontmoetingen aan het hof van de shogun, de politieke en sociale verhoudingen in die periode, en Von Siebolds wetenschappelijke interesse in flora, fauna, medische kennis en instituties.
