Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Privately published by the author. 1973. First Edition. Hard Cover. Blue leather boards with black and gilt inlay to front board bearing titles. Unfortunately the leather has split along one spine junction; at the spine head it has led to a tiny loss (see photograph). Apart from this the book has no faults and is fine. Scarce as a signed copy. Limitation page is flat signed by the author and is dated December 1973. It is not clear whether the 24 written by the author relates to the date or copy No 24 in the limited run. There is another name at the top of the page (Andrew Davidson) which looks as if it is in the author's hand although this is not verified. Frontis of The Scribe in monochrome The village of Icil, in the land of Compute, was created by its original form being joined by two other makers - the Eye and the Pye. The chronicle is related by a scribe who had come from the land of the Tit-e-I, where he had tired of his labour. He was hired as a scribe to Albert the Good - a key member of the Council of Elders in the village of Icil. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. Limited Edition. Hot off the press and SIGNED by the double Booker Winner on the LIMITED EDITION page. These wonderful essays and reviews offer another aspect of the much loved history writer. Hilary Mantel s extraordinary successful Wolf Hall novels could be enough to make you forget that she is a wonderful essayist as well. This collection of her pieces for the London Review of Books is perfect for any reader looking for an intelligent, funny and sometimes deliciously snarky selection to dip in and out of. As well as her thoughtful and illuminating essays, Mantel s book reviews are an absolute treat, from a master who draws on the same intellectual and emotional sharpness in her reading as in her writing. Hardcover. Condition: New. Limited Edition. Geoffrey Hill's Clavics was published as an installment of Daybooks. Hill's subject matter is often hard to disentangle, but that's my fault; it is not his. I have rarely found him as approachable as other poets, but then up pops an instance where something stirs under the density and change happens. His poems can be allusive, dissonant, and yet playful as Finnegans Wake. Many poets deploy surface difficulty (Guy Davenport called it false density ) to mask essential emptiness; but when Hill is difficult it is because he has something to say that cannot be said glibly. He rewards attentive readers. This fabulous and perfect signed limited edition is number 49 of ONLY 100 copies. It is signed by the author on the half-title. There is a splendid photographic illustration inset to the front cover, and two other illustrations from historical sources within the book. Beautifully cloth bound, in a matching, slipcase, it is emphatically signed by the Author and now VERY RARE INDEED. Signed by Author.

Soft cover. Condition: As New. Limited Edition. A rare limited edition from this quirky Press; and a damnably fine work of fiction. I daresay it is one of the very few books ever written in a shed at the bottom a of a cliff. It was nominated for a Carnegie Medal. It has a subhead which I am not allowed to type out for a booklist. During its five word sequence it has two words frowned upon by puritans. Give this fine work a go, and please note that the signature is on a loose bookplate and it is not only signed it is also dated. Signed by Author.

Truman, inscribed to the first female Treasurer of the United States, Georgia Neese Clark. Includes a TLS from Truman about her hostage situation in 1956. (illustrator). Deluxe Limited Edition. Thick octavo, [two volumes], xi, [1], 596pp; xi, [3], 594pp. Blue cloth, titles in gilt on spines over black labels. Top edge gilt. Both volumes appear unread. In the publisher's acetate jackets, small closed tear along heel of spine, otherwise fine examples. Gray endpapers. Housed in slipcases made specifically for this limited edition set, light shelf wear to boards, light soiling to labels, solid hinges. The slipcase for "Year of Decisions" is signed on the side panel by Harry Truman. Only Volume I, "Year of Decisions" is inscribed, and reads: "To the Honorable Georgia Neese Clark Gray / with kindest regards and with appreciation of her friendship and her efficient public service! / Harry S. Truman / Independence / Jan. 28, 1956." The associated letter follows a hostage situation in 1956, when Mrs. Clark was held hostage at her bank in Richland, Kansas. Truman adds to the letter: "Saw in the noon paper that a bandit had been shot in your town - hope he's the right one!" Georgia Neese Clark (1898-1995) was the first woman appointed Treasurer of the United States, serving from June 1949 to January 1953 under President Harry S. Truman. A graduate in economics from Washburn College, she worked briefly as an actress in New York before returning to Kansas to manage her family's bank during the Great Depression. A committed Democrat, she became Kansas's Democratic National Committeewoman in 1936 and supported Truman's 1948 presidential campaign. Following his victory, Truman appointed her Treasurer, making her the first woman whose signature appeared on U.S. currency. This set of the Memoirs of Harry S. Truman is limited to 500 unnumbered copies. They were originally meant to be released to the public as a signed limited edition set for $35.00, but President Truman had no desire to profit from his signature. In a letter to Ken McCormick of Doubleday, dated July 1, 1955, Truman comments that "I cannot possibly enter into a program which would look as if I were selling autographs instead of a book. I want the book sold on its merit." Doubleday sent President Truman 500 copies of the deluxe set, which he inscribed to dignitaries over the years. Not all of the 500 were distributed by the president, with a few remaining unsigned copies being sold at the Truman Library.
