Hardcover. Condition: New. Limited Edition. SIGNED LIMITED EDITION. This is the toughest and most durable edition ever of this masterpiece. It is bound in full leather. It is signed and comes with a certificate of provenance. This is printed on acid free paper, which will not deteriorate. It is an heirloom standard production. And this is a perfect copy. About the book; if you read it as straightforward narrative it is almost unendurable. But if you look at it as a parable of the imagination it is revealed as both amusing and serious, wild fantasy that has nothing to do with reality. It is a rich classic of satirical brilliance. And this is the greatest book production of it available. Signed by Author.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Limited Edition. Full-Leather, first US SIGNED Edition, this gorgeous example of book production has one other reason all collectors; Wallace Stegner wrote an introduction which is exclusive to this issue. A Rolls Royce production standard for a riveting book, this copy is in an unread perfect condition. This gorgeous special edition was produced exclusively for Franklin for their Signed Club members only; marbled endpapers; gilt edged pages; acid proof paper; and it is signed by the author on a special front page. Beautiful typography, the sort that does not call attention to itself, but to the words of the text. This is a great edition for the collector, because it is built to last. And frankly that is the way the author wrote it, which makes this an heirloom production. Wallace Earle Stegner moved around a lot, his autobiography claimed "twenty places in eight states and Canada", mostly in the West. At the University of Utah he was required to choose a major, one economics course made him change it. He related that his professors urged him to go to graduate school, after earning his BA at Utah in 1930 he added an MA from the University of Iowa in 1932. He taught at the University of Wisconsin and Harvard before settling in at Stanford where he developed the creative writing program. He became an advocate for wilderness and preservation issues, he was assistant to Stewart Udall at the Dept. of the Interior and a director of the Sierra Club. But mostly he wrote, over a dozen novels, even more nonfiction books, and a half dozen collections of essays and short stories. One of the great 20th Century writers. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Full blue leather binding by Hatchards of Piccadilly, and EXTREMELY rare due to the War Economy production of the time. Spine has five raised bands, gilt lettering. Board edges are ruled in gilt, gilt ruled turn ins. Very slight staining to covers. Top edge gilt. Previous owner's bookplate to front endpaper. Very solid binding with no loose pages, a few small spots of foxing but text is generally very clean throughout. Overall condition is Very Good. The first printing of the first edition of this novel, set in the world of rubber production. The author was best known for Grand Hotel, one of the biggest selling novels of its day, and made into a brilliant film. Very rare indeed to find this work in a leather binding. War economy production standards meant that books quickly deteriorated, and perhaps this one was especially bound to preserve it. Beautiful writer, equally adept in English and German, Vicki Baum was also hugely popular. Her books are well worth a read. This is a genuinely rare copy, possibly unique. Hardcover. Condition: As New. Limited Edition. An enduring classic, and one that richly deserves the very special treatment of this gorgeous leather bound special limited edition designer classic from Penguin. Any collector will be delighted with this permanent edition, designed for a long life, and a really aesthetic one too. Here, at last, we have a PERFECT Special Edition, and a first edition thus. Penguin asked the brilliant leather designer, Bill Amberg, to design a six book set. Amberg chose vegetable tanned buffalo skin from 'fallen animals' - which means they died from natural causes. The skins were processed in a totally ecological way, where the water is recycled after filtering through reed beds. The resultant leather is tough and aesthetic, and, like all great leather bindings, can only improve with handling. Amberg has used Yapp binding, where the leather overlaps the exposed edges of the text block. Such bindings are limp, with rounded corners, so the leather edges protect the text block as the y soften and envelope the pages. The leather edges are beautifully sewn. Additionally, there is a tethered bookmark in the same material which bears the book's title. At the base of the leather spine is a blind embossed Penguin logo. This is a truly delightful production, and it comes inside a blond card box. The box is secured with a beautiful paper sash. Inside the book is a paper slip that reveals the details of the production process. This is a much-coveted series, and this is the first printing thus, denoted by the '1' on the copyright page. Only 1000 copies were issued of each title, and therefore this is part of a limited luxury edition. Now becoming RARE.
