Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Billys Story: My Life as a Teenage POW has been compiled from a personal chronicle penned by Billy Young throughout the 1970s, supplemented by hundreds of conversations that Lynette and Billy have shared in the course of their close friendship spanning more than two decades. It is the only first-hand published account by an ordinary soldier imprisoned by the Japanese at the infamous Sandakan POW Camp, and one of only three books by a survivor at the Kempeitais equally notorious Outram Road Gaol. Billy is now the only soldier left alive from Sandakan, and the only Australian prisoner still alive from Outram Road. Lynette Silver provides historical details gleaned from years of combing archival documents, and Billy gives his unique narrative immerse vibrancy and life as he takes the reader on a very personal journey. Through the eyes of a tearaway teenaged soldier, Billy shares his thoughts and experiences, some of which have never before been revealed secrets that he has kept even from his closest family. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Vivian Bullwinkel has put on a brave face to the world for the past 52 years, ever since she was released from a Japanese prison camp in Sumatra at the end of World War II. Her story is one she has recounted many times. Vivian was the sole survivor of a massacre of 21 nursing sisters and one civilian woman by Japanese troops on Radji Beach on Bangka Island. Vivian revealed the truth of what happen to army investigators but they censored her testimony and chose to obliterate it from the record. Despite her best efforts, Vivian was gagged from the outset by her own government and by the Australian army, who ordered her to keep quiet an order that, as a serving member of the military, she was bound to keep. Vivian was desperate to speak out. She knew that the truth would set her free from the years of torment. Thwarted by higher authorities, by a succession of men who thought that they knew better, she was prevented from doing so. Lynette Ramsay Silver has uncovered what really happened on Bangka Island. I refuse to stay silent, to be a party to any further cover-up. It is time to tell the real story of the life of this amazing Australian woman. Vivian wanted a voice. I am proud, finally, to be able give it to her. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Angels of Mercy follows the gripping stories of two different Australian nursing sisters, who overcame the challenging adversities of two very different circumstances. In the 1930s Marjorie Silver, the outbacks flying sister, fought almost single handedly against the isolation, poverty, heat and dust of the far west of New South Wales to bring vital medical assistance to her far-flung patients. Sister Pat Gunther, who served in the Far East on the battlefields of Malaya and Singapore, then fought a desperate battle for survival in the prison camps of Sumatra. These two remarkable, highly resilient women may not be remembered as great Australians, but they will be remembered for making Australia great. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. It is June 2008, and I am on a hillside overlooking the NSW country town of Boorowa. It is a long time since I felt any need to visit the cemetery, but today I have come to talk to my father. My research on the notorious BurmaThai railway, where he was a POW has brought me to this moment. For the past 13 years I have been following my fathers war time footsteps as a way of understanding him as a person and intern understanding myself. Sergeant Fred Howe struggles to stay conscious. A hundred needles from the barbed wire securing him to the tree pierce his bony body; cigarette burns inflicted by his tormentors sting his bare skin; the hot tropical sun escalates his thirst and hunger tears at his gut. In his lucid moments, Fred ponders his decision to enlist. After all, he was 34 years of age at the time, a married man and father to four children. He wonders how much longer he can last, both physically and mentally. Will the war soon be over and those who have made it thus far be on their way home, or will it drag on until not a single one of them survives? As a young girl I had no understanding of the war. All Dad had ever told me was that, during the fighting his mates had been shot and killed on either side of him. At the age I was then, this didnt mean much to me. I just didnt understand. I never asked any questions, so I received no answers answers that I would come to crave. I now realise why, for so much of my life, I have been at war with my father, literally and by following in his footsteps. I am also finally understanding the degree to which his experiences impacted our relationship. Fred Howe was a prisoner of war for more than three years. I have been a virtual prisoner for sixty. SOFTCOVER. An air of mystery surrounded Marcel Caux, one of the Australia's last surviving veterans of World War I, prior to his death in August 2004. He was unknown to most Australians until four years ago, when he suddenly emerged as a veteran of World War I. The Department of Veteran Affairs said he had wished to retain some anonymity until that time and had asked that the ? le containing his service records be kept private. Why? Author and historian Lynette Silver sets out to explain the mysterious life of Marcel Caux in this fascinating account of a man, who up until 2001, even had his family wondering what his past really revealed. In a beautifully written and pacy read, Silver unravels the true Marcel Caux Veterans Affairs records in fact show that Caux's real name was Harold Katte, born 1899, who served in France and returned to Australia in 1919. Records issued in the name Marcel Caux describe the service of Harold Katte. His son, Marcus de Caux only knew his father as Harold Katte. Was Caux trying to forget the horrors of war? Did he in fact serve, as he said he did, during his time in the Great War? Caux scarcely talked about his war for 85 years and up until 2001 he never attended an Anzac Day or Remembrance Day service. "I'd rather forget the whole bloody business," he said. The amazing unravelling of the real Marcel Caux -- through official records, photographs and interviews with family, friends and acquaintances -- will certainly take you on a journey that, up until now, has been illusive. 2006. A fine, as new, copy. 1.4 Centimeters X 14.61 Centimeters X 22.35 Centimeters.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In February 1942, when Australian Bill Reynolds escaped from beleagured Singapore in a battered Japanese fishing boat, he had no idea that his nondescript vessel would be the catalyst for Operation Jaywick, one of the most daring missions undertaken behind enemy lines in World War II. Using Reynold's boat, now renamed Krait, a small band of intrepid men attacked enemy shipping in Singapore Harbour an action that would have far reaching and tragic repercussions on the people of Singapore. The following year, members of the same team embarked upon a second and far more ambitious raid, Operation Rimau. Although this mission was partially successful, every member of the party was killed. In telling the story of both these raids, author Lynette Silver reveals a number of deadly secrets, and gives an insight into the world of covert operations, partly through the eyes of Denis Emerson-Elliott, a British secret service agent closely associated with both missions. She also lays to rest a number of myths which have arisen in the sixty-five years since the Singapore raids took place. Some are the result of assumptions, based on too little knowledge, others were spawned by rumour. In some cases they were deliberate fabrications, either to make up for lack of information or to present a particular spin. Once film-makers stepped in, the distortions increased in the name of dramatic licence. One widely circulated story claimed that the greatest contribution of the Jaywick mission (classified as top secret until after the war), was to raise the spirits of the Australian public at a time when Allied victories were few and far between. A sobering aspect of many of the special operations carried out by Australian forces during World War II is that many fine men who volunteered for hazardous service died while carrying out missions that were politically, rather than militarily, motivated. Even more sobering is the fact that on the Australian army's post-war assessment, many of these operations, including Jaywick and Rimau, achieved nothing but death, misery and suffering. A fascinating account of some of the most daring, and politically motivated, missions undertaken by Australian soldiers behind enemy lines in WWII Singapore.
