Allí completó sus estudios de literatura latinoamericana, recibiendo el doctorado en 1978 con una tesis sobre José María Arguedas, publicada posteriormente por el Instituto for the Study of Ideologies and Literatura de la University of Minnesota (1980). Actualmente ejerce la docencia en una universidad del Upper Midwest norteamericano (Saint John's, en Collegeville, Minnesota). Su novela más reciente, Verano Yanqui, fue publicada en Santiago en 1985, por Ediciones de Obsidiana. Diario de Europa, texto escrito en los días de su viaje al Viejo Continente (junio-diciembre de 1981), compendia, en un estilo a la vez cronístico y proteico, su percepción casi siempre desmitificadora de esas en todo caso acuciantes realidades de allende el Atlántico.
