He was the first European to enter Petra. He was the discoverer of the colossal figures at Abu Simbel. He penetrated to Mecca and lived there for many months as an Arab. And he achieved all this, and much more, in only a few years, dying in 1817, in his early thirties worn out by his prodigious feats. Burckhardt came to Britain from his native Switzerland at age 21 and met Sir Joseph Banks--where he discovered his future role. The goal was Timbuktu and the trip must be made from Egypt--travelling westerly with pilgrim caravans returning from Mecca.
