The author was a celebrated botanist and artistic designer (Northfield, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, 1858- Durban, Natal, 1930) who specialised in the study of the forests of the southern African continent. Contains two parts, the first consisting of a general description of the territory, indications on the location and types of forests, specific descriptions of species, types of wood, products that can be extracted, such as the rubber tree and rubber products, and ends with recommendations on the use of these resources. The second part consists entirely of 100 hors-text folios with drawings by Thomas Sim, reproducing leaves, trunks, branches and general features identifying each species. A work of great rigour, based on field observations extending over several months, describing the species by internat.
