Colour lithograph showing the entrance to a Shinto temple in Simoda, the scene is enlivened by children playing, passers by and a group examining the work and tools of a European artist sketching the temple entrance. Sheet measures approximately 22 x 28.7cm. A very good copy. A plate from Perry, M.C. & Hawks, F. -- Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas & Japan. Performed in the Years 1852, 1853 and 1854 . which was first published in 3 volumes in Washington in 1858 and in the single volume edition in 1856.
