Ce volume, d'une très belle exécution , est la reproduction textuelle d'un manuscrit célèbre que possède la bibliothèque de Valenciennes. Quoique mise souvent à contribution, l'histoire écrite par Simon Le Boucq est encore un répertoire extrêmement riche ; le consciencieux auteur, en faisant avec un grand soin l'histoire et la description des églises, monastères, abbayes et fondations pieuses de sa ville , n'a pas manqué d'intercaler dans son livre ( dédié à la Sainte Vierge ) les chartes et documents (quelques-uns du douzième siècle) qu'il avait à sa disposition. Il n'est pas moins précieux en ce qu'il relate dans leur intégrité les épitaphes des princes, seigneurs et hommes célèbres, qu'on lisait de son temps dans les églises de Valenciennes.
