Hardcover. Condition: As New. American naval architect and engineer Simon Lake (1866-1945) was a pioneer of the modern submarine. In the 1890s, he tried to sell his designs to the U.S. Navy, but lost out to Irish engineer John Philip Holland. Nonetheless, Lake went on to supply submarines to the U.S. Navy during World War I through his Lake Torpedo Boat Company. Offered here is a cancelled check hand-signed by Lake and mounted in a faux-leather portfolio. The check is issued by the Milford Trust Company (Lake lived most of his life in Milford, Connecticut) and is made out to an Ernest Kropper for $50.00, and dated August 22, 1932. Facing the check is a black and white photograph of Lake superimposed over one of his submarines, along with an engraved plaque describing his career and achievements. The portfolio measures approx. 13" x 10.25" when folded, and opens flat to approx. 20.75" wide. Condition is FINE, with not cracks, chips, stains, or other flaws.

HARD BACK GREY. Condition: VERY GOOD. JACKET: TORN DJ. Signed by Simon Lake with an inscription. Dj is creased at spine, tear at top edge, lightly rubbed cover, closed tears, rubbed, and chipped. Book has general shelf wear, small bump at bottom edge, and two bookplates. Inscription states, "To Charles B Driscoll, Who calls himself the probable descendant from a pirate and has "Doublooms" and other writings made "Pirate Lou" a fascinating study. Now why not give an analysis if the cruelty of the Capt. Kiddo & Morgan in comparison with some of the wisdom Pirates which would show that if you are a descendant of a Pirate, he weas probably a kind hearted gentleman and prayed on only a fur of the ??? white modern Pirates prey upon and destroy millions of both the rich & poor. Simon Lake 9/11/38 with pleasant Recollections. Simon Lake, a Pleasantville, New Jersey native, lived in Milford between 1907 and his passing in 1945. Lake launched the first submarine to operate in open water, the Argonaut, Jr., in 1898. Partially-Printed Document, Bank Check measuring 2-5/8" x 6.5", Signed "Simon Lake" as the Payer of $8.25 on check from The Argonaut Salvage Company payable to Bridgeport Cornice Works, Ink, drawn on the Bridgeport Trust Company. SIMON LAKE (1866-1945): Lake built the first Submarines for the U.S. Navy and is considered the "Father of the Modern Submarine" February 23, 1910-Dated, Choice Extremely Fine. Punch-cancelled "PAID +11021" at the center. Lake's signature is in black ink and countersigned by the company Treasurer. Includes ephemera from the "Simmon Lake Project" signed by his grandson, Jeff Lake, a biography of Lake and a photo. Simon Lake was an American mechanical engineer and naval architect who obtained over two hundred patents for advances in naval design. He competed with John Holland to build the first submarines for the United States Navy. He was inspired by Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" and brought his visions to life. He was a Quaker American mechanical engineer and naval engineer and became known as the "Gentle Genius" and is considered the "Father of the Modern Submarine" "Jules Verne was in a sense the director-general of my life. When I was not more than ten or eleven years old I read his Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea and my young imagination was fired.But with the impudence which is a part of the equipment of the totally inexperienced I found fault with some features of Jules Verne's Nautilus and set about improving on them." - Simon Lake. Distinguished Engineer who played a major role in the development of the submarine for practical employment. In 1887, Lake's "Argonaut" became the first successful voyage by submarine into the open sea. Lake also innovated submarine torpedo boats, sunken ship detection devices and many other nautical inventions. Signed check, entirely in his hand, 3x6", dated "Aug. 2, 1930" made out for "Cash" for the amount of "$90.00". Boldly signed: "Simon Lake". Cancellation holes do touch signature.
