The locomotives brought the journey time to Edinburgh down to just six hours, and maintained this over the next twenty years, gaining a h…uge following amongst railway enthusiasts in the process. Even as late as 1979, they were breaking records, when they took 'The Hull Executive' from King's Cross to its first stop at Retford at an average speed of 91.4mph. This book illustrates their life from the debut of the prototype locomotive Deltic on the East Coast Main Line, all the way through to the final rail tour on 2 January 1982. The key stages of their working lives are covered, including liveries, names, modifications, and withdrawals, with a collection of high-quality, previously unpublished photographs. It concludes with the farewell event at Doncaster works in February 1982 and the passing into preservation of six class members. This book charts the story of the 22 Class 55 'Deltic' locomotives, from their 1961 debut to their 1982 farewell. It explores their record-breaking speed, iconic services, and devoted following, with rare photos covering liveries, modifications, and the preservation of six surviving engines. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The BR diesel locomotive types, that under the TOPs renumbering scheme became Classes 44s, 45s, and 46s, are best known by their nickname of 'Peaks'. This is derived from the first ten locomotives being given the names of British mountains. These machines originated under the Modernisation P…lan of 1955 as BR's Type 4 design. The Class 45s and Class 46s had slightly more powerful engines compared to the Class 44s, with the Class 46s having Brush rather than Crompton Parkinson Ltd electrical equipment.The Class 45s became the main motive power on the Midland main line for many years, while the Class 46s were used heavily on cross country services between the North East and South West. The Class 44s were at first employed on the West Coast main line but were latterly were relegated to freight duties mostly being based at Toton depot in Nottinghamshire.This new study covers the three types from their design and inception through to withdrawal and preservation. It draws extensively on original source material from a number of archives, and is lavishly illustrated with over 200 black and white and colour photographs almost all of which are being published for the very first time.
