(bookplate) Jean-Baptiste Remi Le Bas de Fresne (1723-1773), archdeacon of Gace, clerical advisor to the parliament of Rouen, dean of the chapter in Lisieux and builder of the deanery of Lisieux. Thibault's work was produced during a period when the Italian rapier (or epee) held sway. "The Italians discovered the effectiveness of the dexterous use of the point rather than the edge of the sword. By the end of the 16th century, their lighter weapon.and simple, nimble, and controlled fencing style, emphasizing skill and speed rather than force, spread throughout Europe. Most of the wrestling tricks [used in earlier disciplines] were abandoned, the lunge was discovered, and fencing became established as an art" (Encyclopaedia Britannica). The present image marks the zenith of the use of the epee in Europe. "In the latter half of the 17th century, the sword and swordsmanship changed dramatically with a change in gentleman's dress. From Girard Thibault: 'Academie de l'espée de Girard Thibault d'Anvers: ou se demonstrent par reigles mathematiques sur le fondement d'un cercle mysterieux la theorie et pratique des (.) secrets du maniement des armes a pied et a cheval.' Leiden: Bonaventura Elzevier en Abraham Elzevier, 1630. The attribution to Simon van de Passe was made on the basis of his signature apprearing on one of the plates, comparable to the Fredrik Hendrik's. Etching and engraving on paper; plate mark: 473 x 343 mm, total: 500 x 354 mm; only state; a couple of small brown stains, some rubbing, otherwise in great condition. Hollstein 140.

Allegory of Frederick Henry as the protector of Religion and Freedom. Frederick Henry (Dutch: Frederik Hendrik; 1584-1647) was the sovereign prince of Orange and stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Guelders, Overijssel in the Dutch Republic from 1625 until his death in 1647. In the final seven years of his life, additionally he was the stadtholder of Groningen (1640-1647). Above the oval portrait are two angels playing shofars and holding a wreath with the coat of arms of the seven United Provinces. Libertas and Religio are standing at the sides, in front ot the prince personifications of Negotiatio (Negotiation), Politia (Politic), Prudentia (Prudence) and Victoria (Victory). Engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 484 x 754 mm., platemark 450 x 727 mm., engraved by Simon van de Passe (1564-1637) after Adriaen van Nieulandt (I) (1568-1658), dated 1628. In good condition, but with two horizontal folds over the width of the sheet (one folding up the caption area (probably for storage). An old restoration to a tear in the top edge (extending minimally into the image area). Some soiling in the margins. Two different states of 'Liberum Belgium', allegorical representation of the prosperity of the Dutch Provinces. The plate was modified in three areas: the portrait above in the middle, below in the coat of arms, in the plynth below on which hangs a lion skin with inscription and in the signature and address below with dates. The first is dated 1624. Prince Maurice of Orange is seated at the top of a throne. Above two angels playing shofars and holding a wreath with the coat of arms of the seven United Provinces. Libertas and Religio are standing at the sides, in front ot the prince personifications of Negotiatio (Negotiation), Politia (Politic), Prudentia (Prudence) and Victoria (Victory). On the plynth at the bottom: 'LE MAINTIENDRAY / MAURITIUS PRINCEPS AURIACUS. Et nobilissimi Ordinis Garterij Eques.' Further 14 lines in Latin by Daniel Heyns: 'Hispaniae domitor gentis. omnibus aequa datur / Daniel Heynsius' and further the Privilege and the address: 'Adrianus a Nieuwlandt Inventor et Pictor, Symon de Pas sculptor, Anno MDCXXIIII' The second is dated 1628. On the throne an orange tree, its branches encicling a bust portrait of Prince Frederick Henry of Orange. On the plynth the inscription reads: 'PATRIAEQ PATRIQ / FREDERICO HENRICO D.G. PRINCIPI / Arausionensium, Comiti Nassaviae. et Equiti Regii Odinis Garterii.'
