Edition originale rare de cette défense du libraire Jean-Nicolas Barba dans une affaire de délit de presse. "Barba fut poursuivi, en 1824, pour avoir réédité un roman de Pigault-Lebrun, intitulé Monsieur de Roberville, dans lequel l'auteur semblait avoir jeté une part des souvenirs de sa jeunesse agitée. Le héros, qui vit sous Louis XV, y est un malheureux trompé et battu par les amants de sa femme, laquelle finit au Parc-aux-Cerfs ! Or, le livre avait paru en 1818. Aussi Dupin qui, en habile avocat, raconta divers épisodes de l'ouvrage incriminé, n'eut aucun mal à démontrer la bonne foi de Barba : « Si le ministère public, dit-il, doit ouvrir une nouvelle carrière d'accusations, qu'il avertisse avant de frapper ! Qu'il fasse connaître la révocation de sa tolérance, qu'il promulgue un nouvel Index ! » Le libraire fut acquitté par la Cour royale en 1825, quoique le livre fût saisi et mis au pilon. Les tribulations désastreuses de Monsieur de Roberville reprendront d'ailleurs en 1852, lorsqu'une réimpression de l'ouvrage, en même temps que de deux autres livres de Pigault-Lebrun et de Ducange, vaudra à [Gustave] Barba [fils de Jean-Nicolas et son successeur] un mois de prison et 5000 francs d'amende."
