½ S. 7:21,4 cm. Simon von Stampfer wurde 1825 Nachfolger von Franz Anton von Gerstner als Professor der praktischen Geometrie am Polytechnischen Institut Wien. Ein ebenso großer Eisenbahnfachmann wie sein Vorgänger, wurde nach seinen Plänen die erste österreichische Bahnlinie Linz-Budweis gebaut. 1825 bestieg und vermaß er auf den Meter genau den Großglockner. Stampfer beschäftigte sich mit dem absoluten Gewicht des Wassers, mit Sonnenfinsternissen und dem Durchmesser von Fixsternen. 1832 erfand er die stroboskopische Scheibe, die dem Betrachter den Eindruck eines "laufenden Bildes" (Film) vermittelt. 1835 erhielt er das Patent für ein Nivellierungsinstrument und einen Distanzmesser mit der Neuerung der "Stampferschen Schraube".
