Graphically illustrated cloth-covered boards, with illustrated wraparound band (secured vertically to the rear board with a clear sticker; no dust jacket as issued. Photographs by Stephen Shore. 280 pp., with 150 four-color plates. 15-1/4 x 12-1/4 inches. Photographs by Stephen Shore. Edited by Lesley A. Martin. Designed by Murray & Sorrell FUEL. Near Fine (corners slightly bumped, not affecting text block). From the publisher: "Stephen Shore's Uncommon Places is indisputably a canonic body of workâ"a touchstone for those interested in photography and the American landscape. Remarkably, despite having been the focus of numerous shows and books, including the eponymous 1982 Aperture classic (expanded and reissued several times), this series of photographs has yet to be explored in its entirety. Over the past five years, Shore has scanned hundreds of negatives shot between 1973 and 1981. In this volume, Aperture has invited an international group of fifteen photographers, curators, authors, and cultural figures to select ten images apiece from this rarely seen cache of images. Each portfolio offers an idiosyncratic and revealing commentary on why this body of work continues to astound; how it has impacted the work of new generations of photography and the medium at large; and proposes new insight on Shore's unique vision of America as transmuted in this totemic series." From the publisher: In a meticulous and comprehensive dissection of the Bond films, artist Taryn Simon inventoried women, weapons and vehicles in Bond. The contents of these categories function as essential accessories to the narrative's myth of the seductive, powerful, and invincible western male. In Birds of the West Indies, Simon presents a visual database of interchangeable variables used in the production of fantasy, through which she examines the economic and emotional value generated by their repetition. Both books are very fine copies and in a fine slipcase. No dust jacket as issued. As new and still in the publisher's shrinkwrap. Signed by Simon. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. First Edition, First Printing. SIGNED COPY Germany by Steidl, Göttingen (2007). First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Fine gray cloth-covered boards with title stamped in gold on black debossed title block on cover and spine. Photographs and text by Taryn Simon. Foreword by Salman Rushdie. Introduction by Elizabeth Sussman and Tina Kukielski. Commentary by Ronald Dworkin. 152 pp., with 57 four-color plates and additional reference illustrations. 13-1/2 x 10-1/4 inches. SIGNED in black ink on the title page by Simon. Book Condition: New/Fine. SIGNED Published on the occasion of the 2007-2008 exhibition Taryn Simon: An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar at The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt am Main. Fittingly presented in the style of a reference library index, Simon's follow-up to her provocative and acclaimed book The Innocents continues to provoke questions about photography's role in social, cultural and legal discourse. From the publisher: "In An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar, Taryn Simon documents spaces that are integral to America's foundation, mythology and daily functioning, but remain inaccessible or unknown to a public audience. She has photographed rarely seen sites from domains including: science, government, medicine, entertainment, nature, security and religion. This index examines subjects that, while provocative or controversial, are currently legal. The work responds to a desire to discover unknown territories, to see everything. Simon makes use of the annotated photograph's capacity to engage and inform the public. Transforming that which is off-limits or under-the-radar into a visible and intelligible form, she confronts the divide between the privileged access of the few and the limited access of the public.". Signed.

Both volumes 27 x 15cm. Not issued together, but conforming in format. The main monograph, a paperback, 219pp, bound in titled blue wraps, is signed by Taryn Simon on the title page. The other volume is a more fragile white paperback, 99pp, in a glassine envelope with a bi-fold sheet of text which also contains the colophon. The signed blue paperback is the large authoritative documentation of the project published by Hatje Cantz in 2017. The accompanying white paperback is a more conceptual artist's book published a year later, commissioned and published by Artangel and Park Avenue Armory, containing reproductions of visa applications. 'An Occupation of Loss' is a detailed record of the artist's years researching professional mourning, which culminated in a seminal performance at the Park Avenue Armory in 2016. During the installation, professional mourners from around the world simultaneously broadcast their lamentations within a monumental sculptural setting, enacting rituals of grief. The installation combined performance, sound, and architecture to consider the anatomy of grief and the intricate systems we use to manage fate and uncertainty. The book leads the reader through the complicated visa application process for the mourners invited to enter the United States, revealing the underlying structures governing global exchange, the movement of bodies, and the hierarchies of art and culture. The blue paperback has slight staining to cover, otherwise internally good.

New, mint, unread condition; only opened once each for the signature! Softcover. 9¾x6½ (245 x 165 mm). 480 pages, 1075 colour plates. Text by Hans Ulrich Obrist. At Photoeye/Santa Fee selected as one of the best photobooks of 2010 by photographer Peter Sutherland, writer, visual consultant and teacher Alan Rapp and graphic designer, publisher, curator and gallerist Willem van Zoetendaal ("A superb concept: photography of more than 1000 objects not allowed to import at the airport, clear photography made during four days and nights, ordered with a cool distance, a very well designed paperback, nicely printed in full color. Another beautiful product of Steidl. After her book An American Index of Hidden and Unfamiliar which is in my opinion the greatest photobook of the last 10 years, Taryn Simon succeeded to make an intriguing follow up in her ouvre! Documentary and conceptual photography hand in hand!"). Taryn Simon lived in John F Kennedy International Airport from November 16 through November 20, 2009. JFK processes more international passengers than any other airport in the United States. Contraband includes photographs taken 24 hours a day of over 1000 items detained or seized from passengers and express mail entering the U.S. from abroad. Over five days, in both the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Federal Inspection Site and the U.S. Postal Service International Mail Facility, Simon documented items including counterfeit American Express travelers checks, overproof Jamaican rum, heroin, a dead hawk, an illegal Mexican passport, deer penis, purses made from endangered species, Cuban cigars, counterfeit Disney DVDs, khat, gold dust, GHB concealed as house cleaner, cow manure tooth powder, counterfeit Louis Vuitton bags, prohibited sausage, undeclared jewelry, steroids and an ostrich egg. Taryn Simon was born in New York in 1975. Her recent work, An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar, opened at The Whitney Museum of American Art, revealing that which is integral to America?s foundation, mythology and daily functioning, but remains inaccessible or unknown to a public audience. Her earlier work, The Innocents, opened at P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, documenting cases of wrongful conviction in the United States and investigates photography`s role in that process. She is a graduate of Brown University and a Guggenheim Fellow. Permanent collections include: The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Tate Modern; Whitney Museum of American Art; Centre Pompidou; Museum Fur Moderne Kunst; and Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.**********Steidl & Partners.
