Tra Padova, Verona, Vicenza e Treviso si distende oggi una grande pianura segnata da un reticolo fittissimo di insediamenti. Nel Medioevo, però, accanto alle città e a molti nascenti villaggi, grandi spazi erano occupati da paludi, boschi, fiumi e fossi. Gli uomini dell'epoca intervennero vigorosamente in quell'ambiente, nel tentativo non solo di guadagnare spazio alle colture, ma anche di ordinare il territorio per agevolare le comunicazioni e gli scambi, difendersi dagli eventi catastrofici, sfruttare meglio le risorse che l'incolto forniva in abbondanza, rimarcare i caratteri di un dominio politico. Non sempre ci riuscirono, e qualche volta i rimedi furono peggiori dei mali. Le trasformazioni del paesaggio, poi, non furono irreversibili e talvolta l'acqua e i boschi ripresero le terre faticosamente conquistate. Ma le tracce di quell'azione restano in parte riconoscibili anche ai giorni nostri, per quanto cancellate dagli stravolgimenti urbanistici degli ultimi decenni. I saggi qui raccolti ricostruiscono a campione quella vicenda, che è parte di un fenomeno che riguarda tutta l'Europa, e che si presta ad essere studiato pure sotto il profilo della storia culturale, dell'antropologia, delle scienze.
