Evenings With Moody and Sankey: Comprising Sermons and Addresses At Their Great Revival Meetings(With Proceedings of the Christian Convention of Ministers and Laymen), Compiled and Edited by M. Laird Simons, was published by Porter & Coates, Philadelphia, in 1877. This 296-page, 134-year-old, 4 3/4" X 7 1/4" offering in G condition was formerly a copy from the Pike Mennonite Sunday School Library! This offering may well be a First Edition, but I am in no way certain of this. The book's pages have browned/yellowed with age, as have its endpapers front and back. Some standard library markings are in evidence, and some webbing/separation is observed between pages 176-177, and between front loose end page and adjacent blank page(some clear taping was done to attempt to ward off any further separation of individual pages). NOTE: Right off, I wish to mention and highlight the 4-6 beautifully rendered black and white Drawings/Etchings(done, I'm really guessing/stretching here, by one Charles H. Yost?), beginning with the Frontispiece, a pen and ink reproduction of Ira Sankey. This vintage offering is just what the rather lengthy title suggests. There are some twenty-five sermons/addresses by Reverend D.L. Moody, perhaps America's greatest evangelist, certainly the greatest prior to the ubiquitous presence and use of modern means of communication such as radio and television. There are also complete records of the two days of proceedings of the Revival Convention, held at the Hippodrome in New York, in late March, 1876, including Moody's "Farewell Sunday Sermon", "Farewell Address to Christians", and "Farewell Address to Young Converts". Ira Sankey, by the way, was a devout Christian who worked hand-in- glove with Moody for many, many years, at countless revival meetings, church services, and religious/evangelical conferences, as a singer of sacred/inspirational songs, to, in essence, "warm the crowd up" in preparation for Moody's powerfully-delivered messages. Sankey was to Moody, certainly, as George Beverly Shea was to Rev. Billy Graham, late of our times. Some of the sermons presented are "Treasures in Heaven", "Excuses of Men", "How To Study the Bible", "Saul", "The Ark and the Deluge", and "Reaping Whatsoever We Sow". This offering certainly acquaints its readers with the style of preaching/evangelizing of one of the world's truly iconic religious figures of all time, and whose name lives on proudly through the Moody Church, and the Moody Bible Institute, both located in Chicago, Illinois, both founded by D.L. Moody, of course.Thank you!!
