Add to basketA nice sound Large Paper copy of the First Edition in re-backed publishers cloth [11"X8"] retaining the original yellow coated endpapers with the successive book plates of Julius Charles Hare. Maurice Powell and Professor Sir Alfred E.Richardson K.C.V.O.,P.P.R.A. the eminent scholar and architect. Forty tissue guarded plates of mediaeval sculptured fonts, mostly from churches in Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, no doubt on account of the fact that Simpson lived in Stamford, on the borders of those counties. A nice association copy at a very reasonable price.

Tall octavo. xxvi + 80pp + 40 plates + Addenda + Directions to the Binder. Bookplate of the Rt. Rev. Sir Lovelace Tomlinson Stamer Bt., DD, VD, (18 October 1829 - 29 October 1908) who was the first Anglican Bishop of Shrewsbury in the modern era. Full diced stained calf with gilt rope motive surrounding the boards, gilt decoration around the board edges and four raised band with elaborate gilt blocked motifs to the compartments. Title in gilt on a red leather label. End papers and all edges marbled. Ribbon marker intact. Book Condition: Although hinges are a little rubbed they are fully intact. The internal condition is almost entirely free of foxing and without offsetting, both often met with in this work. The plates are therefore beautifully clean (except the frontispiece which has faint spotting). A really fine copy. Three images. Extra shipping needed outside the UK.

Original three-quarter brown leather over marbled boards, gilt lettering on black leather label of spine, gilt tooling. Marbled endpapers. Frontispiece engraving. Dedicated to the Marchioness of Exeter. "As we have attempted in the following work a chronological arrangement, it became necessary in order to render it intelligible, either to invent a nomenclature of our own, or to adopt one already formed; not having hardihood for the first we have followed the second course, and to that end we have taken our mode of classification and terms, from a work which, as it is deservedly the best known, namely, Mr. Rickman's Outlines of English Architecture." (Preface). Contains locations of surviving Norman, early English, and decorated English fonts. All locations are listed on pages xxi-xxvi by town and county. Illustrated with fourty plates drawn by F. Simpson and engraved by Robert Roberts with descriptive text on opposite pages, including measurements of the objects. Addenda with additional information to three of the presented objects. With printer's device, vignette, of Thomas White on last page. Binding with some wear along edges, small chips some fraying at top corner of front foredges,spine with four inch crack at lower back joint, some scuffing along joints. Usual library markings, barcode, sticker, library plate and pocket, and stamps. Frontispiece with heavy foxing in margins, hardly affecting image. Some foxing of plates, a little more then half of them with images not affected. Some plates with heavy foxing. Binding in overall good-, interior in good- to very good condition.
