Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Leo Simpson's Sailor Man is an absurdist fantasy centred on the character Jack and his pursuit of his nemesis Elmo Apse. Drawing on the imagery of the Italian theatrical form of commedia dell'arte, Simpson's comic novel takes on the trappings of modernity and its influences on small town life. Set partly in Belleville, Ontario, the the majority of the novel takes place in Ottawa, Ontario. Leo Simpson was a Canadian author and journalist, who also served as publicity editor of Macmillan Publishers Canada, as well as being a writer in residence at both the University of Ottawa and the University of Western Ontario. Thomas E. Tausly in The Oxford Companion of Canadian Literature, second edition, describes Simpson as a "rarity among Canadian writers" and a "comic novelist of ideas." This particular edition of Sailor Man may be describes as in Very Good + condition, with some scuffing to the edges of the covers, and very slight foxing to the top edges of the pages. This particular volume is inscribed with the authors signature and includes two promotional bookmarks advertising the novel, with one having signed written across the back. Inscribed by Author(s).
