Hardcover. Condition: New. In the summer of 1999, a single peak in the stark, desolate wilderness of the Siachen Glacier became the battleground between India and Pakistan. As conflict engulfed the Kargil sector, intelligence revealed activity atop Point 5770—a strategic peak from which one could command the southern part of the… glacier. The Pakistan Army had established Bilal Post and reclaiming it was both imperative and daunting. In 1999: The Battle for the Heights of Point 5770, Lieutenant General Konsam Himalay Singh and Shiv Kunal Verma retell a gripping episode of the Kargil War when the soldiers of 27 Rajput battalion led by Major Navdeep Singh Cheema climbed the perilous mountain peak to launch an attack on the enemy. This is a riveting account of courage, leadership, and a hard-won victory in extreme conditions.

Hardcover. Condition: New. There are moments in a soldier's life that divide time into before and after. For young 2nd Lieutenant V. K. Singh such a moment arrived in the aftermath of the Bangladesh War of 1971, when he was sent to investigate what was vaguely called a 'race improvement camp'. There, he witnessed a scene for whi…ch no amount of military training could have prepared him. The Bangladesh War is recounted well and often in terms of its operational brilliance leading to the surrender of Pakistan and the birth of a new nation. However, in these retellings, the reason that compelled India into war that year is entirely overlooked. In 1971: The Genocidal War, General V. K. Singh attempts to define the systematic massacre in East Pakistan as genocide, a term long denied to it. Based on General V. K. Singh's first-hand accounts, this book describes in detail the events that preceded the war: the hapless human tide of refugees that started flowing into India in the early months of 1971, the rise of fragile makeshift camps across the frontier and the diseases that followed, India gearing up for hostilities amid strained resources and immense psychological pressure, and the creation of the Mukti Bahini that often worked in conjunction with the Indian Army. The collapse of Pakistani forces was swift and surrender ceremonies were conducted on 17 December. Yet, the military victory did not erase the mass violence that had preceded it. Both factually meticulous and evocative, this book makes a poignant effort to restore dignity to a tragedy largely erased from history.

Hardcover. Condition: New. The war with Pakistan in December 1971 lasted barely two weeks. It concluded on 16 December with a victory for India and the formation of Bangladesh. But there is a lesser known side to this epic military confrontationthat of the western front, namely Jammu and Kashmir. While many contests on this side… of India's border were won, some battles were ill fated. The heroic battle at Daruchhian in the Poonch Sector was one of them. A cone-shaped feature, approximately 1,000 metres in height, Daruchhian was of great tactical significance. The fierce clash on its slopes on the night of 13 December, however, could not ensure its capture. Many Indian soldiers were martyred, and the survivors taken prisoner, including Brigadier (then Major) Hamir Singh, VrC. Heavily injured in battle, he underwent a prolonged recovery at the Command Military Hospital, Rawalpindi, followed by an internment at the POW camp in Lyallpur. Hamir Singh's eyewitness account, recorded by the author, his son Maj Gen Vijay Singh, narrates in riveting detail what took place on that fateful night and what followed. From battle plans that were too perfect to succeed, to soldiers who didn't give up, enemies who honoured each others' professionalism, Pakistanis nostalgic about pre-Partition India, and the shared sorrow and joy that dissolve boundaries of nation and religion, POW 1971 gives us a view of war, valour and humanity that is as heart-wrenching as it is moving.
