NO COPY IN AMERICA: SHAFTESBURY IN THE FRENCH ENLIGHTENMENT. 8vo. (4) ff including half-title, errata, and engr. portrait of the Earl of Shaftesbury signed by Claude Baron (1738-1770), xxiv pp, 348 pp. Bound in contemporary mottled calf with gilt title and emblems on spine; all edges marbled in dark blue. An excellent, perfectly unsophisticated copy. Curiously rare first French edition of the Earl of Shaftesbury's guide to internal moral philosophizing, with a handsome engraved portrait of the author after a painting by John Closterman (ca. 1701). The English original had appeared in 1710, but it seems that Continental interest (particularly French and German) in Shaftesbury did not emerge until the French Enlightenment was well underway. In 1745 Diderot adapted Shaftesbury's Inquiry concerning Virtue for his own Essai sur le Mérite et la Vertu; while in his later correspondence (Oeuvres complètes III, 193) he mentions the present translation, which earned a lengthy and favorable review in the January 1772 issue of the Journal encyclopédique. The translator/editor adds a brief biography of Shaftesbury (1671-1713) in his preface (pp. i-xiii), followed by critical remarks on his Soliloquy and other works (pp. xiv-xxi), complaining of how the 'magic of style, the energy of expression employed by Shaftesbury, are not easy things to make felt in our language'. Of this supposed translator, 'Sinson', we have traced no other published works; and indeed this Soliloque is peculiarly rare in census. According to OCLC there is no physical copy in US institutions, nor even at the BnF; but in various databases including the Catalog Collectif de France we have traced copies at the NLS, BL, Leeds, Lyon, Vendome, Nantes, and the Cour de Cassation in Paris. In 1769 a French translation of the whole of Shaftesbury's works, including the Soliloquy, was published at Geneva; it is certainly more common than the present separately-published work. * ESTC T126241; and cf eg. the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry on Shaftesbury.

ix, [1], 49 pp. 8vo (209 x 138 mm.), blue crushed morocco-backed marbled boards (tail of spine a trifle worn), title on spine. Paris: Bonnefons de la Vialle & Regnault-Delalande, 1814. An uncommon sale catalogue detailing a very large collection of prints. Regnault-Delalande (1762-1824) was the era's leading expert for sales of prints and issued more than 300 sale catalogues. 284 lots, many of which are sizable group lots. This catalogue describes prints by Aliamet, Baudet, Belle, C. Bloemaert, F. Bol, J. Browne, Ag. Carracci, Desnoyers, van Dyck, Earlom, Flippart, Massard, Morghen, Nanteuil, Piranesi, Porporati, Rembrandt, Strange, C. Visscher, Wille, Woollett, etc. Lots 237-72 are suites of prints. Lots 273-82 consist of drawings and paintings attributed to Rubens, D. Teniers, La Hire, L. Le Nain, and Fontenay. Most entries provide concise notes. Regnault-Delalande indicates when the occasional item had appeared in one of his earlier sales. A later annotator has added a handful of prices in pencil. Nice copy; we locate only one example in North America. With the amusing engraved bookplate of [H]enry [Pannier] (1853-1935), the Parisian art dealer and collector of early art sale catalogues, on the front paste-down, and the stamp of the Bibliothèque Heim on verso of title-page. This copy is addressed on the half-title to "Mr. Villequin / grande Cour du Palais royal No. 20" on the half-title. ? Lugt 8623.
