First Edition
8vo. [2], 112 pp. Colour Frontisp. TLS on Exposition letterhead, photos, illustrations throughout, with 1 large folding colour map at rear. Colour-illustrated softcovers, Art Deco cover art of cowgirl on rearing horse, w/ Art Deco Exposition buildings in background, photo illustrations of Hollywood Stars making movies on the Midway (minor creasing to couple corners, edgewear, slight scuffing to spine, annotations for attractions visited within), still VG- copy, from library of L.L. Pflueger, w/ ownership marking on first leaf. First edition of this uncommon souvenir guide to the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition, held to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Texan Independence, and after Dallas had won the right to host the Exposition over Houston & San Antonio because their leadership team was superior. The Exposition coordinated with the WPA to erect permanent buildings, monuments, statues and grave markers, and the Hall of State was part of the funding. Billed as the first World's Fair in the Southwest, the Cavalcade of Texas and The Hall of Negro Life proved to be two of the most popular attractions. The unofficial Fort Worth Texas Centennial was a competing attraction produced by Billy Rose, with nearly 1 million attendees, while the Dallas Texas Centennial achieved nearly 6.4 million visitors.
