Seller: Between the Covers-Rare Books, Inc. ABAA, Gloucester City, NJ, U.S.A.
Unbound. Condition: Good. Manuscript copy of a poem, *The Little Scholar*. 4.75" x 12.5". Old folds and a few small chips and tears, good. Written on both sides. Six stanzas neatly penned and outlined with a decorative ink border. Signed twice by Burrus Slack, and with his decorative stamp. An old plantation hymn, *The Little Scholar* wasn't collected until 1882 by African-American author and clergyman Marshall William Taylor in his *A Collection of Revival Hymns and Plantation Melodies*. Slack was white, born in New Jersey in 1830. His 1909 death certificate in Pennsylvania lists his occupation as "laborer". A handsome little evocation of a plantation poem.
