Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In her latest collection of poems Jo Slade continues her investigation of displacement and difference and illustrates how these experiences can be transformed through poetry, a transformation that is not so much redemptive, as prophetic. These are inquisitive, sonorous, intense poems that dr…aw us into a world where actuality and dream collide, where loneliness, grief and resilience are innate. Informed by history and personal memory, Jo Slade propels us forward, from the title poem, Cycles and Lost Monkeys, with its dark specter of surveillance, to the final section where we are confronted by the consequences of indifference to authoritarianism. As the judges of the Michael Hartnett Poetry Prize 2014 commented in their citation regarding Jo Slades winning collection The Painters House (Salmon Poetry, 2013), spareness, together with a painters ability to step back from the canvas, to detach, to allow light to fall on the object, is one of the great strengths of her work. There is grief here, and there is fortitude. The world in these poems is often edged with mystery, the unknowable, but the poems enact, over and over again, a sureness that we belong in this world. In her latest collection of poems Jo Slade continues her investigation of displacement and difference and illustrates how these experiences can be transformed through poetry, a transformation that is not so much redemptive, as prophetic. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In this her fourth collection of poetry, Jo Slade explores the fractured landscape of memories and meanings. These are poems of the journey; always moving forward and deeper into an essential truth that is her own individual voice. There is a shamanic quality to these poems, meaning and meta…phor combine to create a unique music, a language sometimes tentative, that enables her to understand the complexity of meaning itself. Crossings are a necessary part of the journey. Sometimes risky, they require a kind of leap of faith, as in the act of poetry. But ultimately poetry sustains, even within the limitations of language, there is a way through to understanding.Jo Slade lives and works in Limerick. She is the author of three previous books of poetry: In Fields I Hear Them Sing (Salmon, 1989); The Vigilant One (Salmon, 1994) which was nominated for The Irish Times / Aer Lingus Literature Prize; and Certain Octobers (Editions Eireanna, Quimpeir France, 1997) which received a publication bursary from the Centre du Livre, Paris. She was Poet-in-Residence for Limerick County Council in 2002/2003. She was nominated in 2003 for the "Prix Evelyn Encelot" Ecriture Prize, Maison des Ecrivains, Paris. Her poems have been published in many journals and anthologies, in Ireland and abroad. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In 2010 poet and painter Jo Slade published a chapbook, The Artist's Room. In her latest full collection, she expands on this theme, exploring The Painter's House in its entirety. The poems trace identity through language and image, with an instinctive appreciation of those important yet tran…sient details captured by our eyes and ears. There is the passing of time and the seasons, alongside reflections on loss, and a reminder of the value of intuition in a mysterious, often chaotic world.Jo Slade is the author of four previous collections, including The Vigilant One (1994), nominated for the Irish Times/Aer Lingus Literature Prize, and City of Bridges (2005), both published by Salmon Poetry. In 2003 she was nominated for the 2003 Prix Evelyn Encelot Ecriture Prize by the Maison des Ecrivains in Paris. Her poems have been translated into French, Spanish, Romanian, Russian and Slovenian. She lives in Limerick. Jo Slade takes us on a journey through time and reminds us of the value of intuition, of finding individual expression for our experience of being in our mysterious, often chaotic world.
