Half leather over boards. Condition: Fine. Limited Edition. Folio. Pp. [6], 65 followed by 57 pages of "prospects," or views of the castles and landscapes. Bound in tan half-calf over cloth boards, spine with gilt and six raised bands; gilt crest on front board. In the paper-covered slipcase that shows slight wear to head and tail of spine, slight fading to front and rear panel. Of an edition limited to 500 copies, this is hand-numbered copy 371. Signed by four principals involved in the production of the publication. First published by Abell Swalle in 1693, this facsimile provides a fine simulacrum of the original work.

An engraved view on laid paper, not coloured. Plate size is 43cm x 27cm, on a sheet measuring 53.5cm x 34cm. Number "53" in the lower right corner of the plate. A clean, very good copy with a closed tear, or wrinkle, in the lower margin, scarcely noticeable. Originally published in Slezer's Theatrum Scotiae (7 editions: 1693 - 1874); this plate bears the number "57" in the 1693 first edition. The plate was also issued (along with a number of others from Slezar's work) in the final volume of the four-volume [1724-1728] edition of Joseph Smith's "Britannia Illustrata, or Nouveau Theatre de la Grande Bretagne". This is a folio-size plate, with no center fold; we believe it to be the version published in the 1724 Britannia Illustrata, a book with a complex and interesting publishing history: Nouveau théâtre de la Grande Bretagne is an expanded version of Britannia Illustrata which was first published in 1707, and enlarged in following years. "The whole collection, with its alternating title and relatively fluid content, provided the printsellers with a vehicle for disposing of copies of topographical engravings issued over a considerable period of time by a number of publishers" (Adams, London Illustrated, p.38). This view is of the East side of the Rock, where a fortress was built. Scotland's King James I was forced to take refuge here as a boy, to avoid being killed.
