It appears to be ink from the time of the book's production.(4) The gilt type face on the dark blue oxford cloth spines is bold and bright. (5) NOTE: This set published 1957 . The original printing was 1926. (6) In volume II I noticed just a few black check marks in the page margins that are unobtrusive.
