Cover design by Patricia Manzone. keywords: Travel America Roadside. DESCRIPTION - Modern man knows where he wants to go on vacation. But aren't you tired of visiting dull historical sites and 'quaint' spoon-and-hankie souvenir shops in overrated places like Europe? Aren't you tired of getting an expensive sunburn and a raw deal on tiny islands that don't even get cable? Aren't you tired of freezing in 'untouched wilderness' while fun things like amusement parks, drive-thru fast food, and bathrooms are a hundred miles away? We know you are. That's why we wrote Roadside America, a very funny and eminently useful guide to the beautifully tasteless and wonderfully weird leisure-time landscape of America's tourist attractions. God knows how many roadside attractions there are - well, He probably doesn't - but we do, and our trusty staff has discovered a bounty of attractions from Niagara Falls to Beverly Hills that the discriminating traveler will truly enjoy. 'Like what?' you ask. Like this! - The Seven Wonders of Roadside America from South of the Border to the Cypress Knee Museum; Special coast-to-coast Elvis and Atomic Tours; Leapin' gators, divin' horses, bitin' snakes and performin' chimps from Gatorama to Parrot Jungle; Two Stonehenges, the London Bridge, and a Polynesian Paradise right here in the USA; The TV homes of Fred Flintstone, the Cartwrights, and Hee-Haw open to the public; The 25 most unusual items on display in American museums, from Einstein's Brain to Edison's Last Breath; And more, more, more! We know today's traveler has little time to waste so we use precise scientific instruments to sort out conflicting claims and exaggerated promises. Who's really got the World's Largest Peanut? We settle it once and for all. Great spots like Van Damme's Pygmy Forest and Weeki-Wachee won't be around forever. inventory #26920.

Welty joined the Beloit College, Wisconsin, biology department in 1934. After a few years, he became disappointed in the lack of a current biology text on birds, so took on the job of research and wrote a book himself. Titled Life of Birds, it became the most widely used college textbook on ornithology in the United States and went through several revisions. At their rural home in Turtle Township, Wisconsin, the Weltys established a wildlife refuge which was used as a learning center for students. They traveled widely and their home became a place to entertain faculty and friends. In all of his pursuits, Carl found a willing and competent helper in his wife Susan, herself an author of several books. Welty had just finished work on a fourth edition of Life of Birds when he died on May 29, 1986. -- Excerpted from "Five to be Inducted into Beloit Hall of Fame," Beloit Daily News, Sept. 17, 1991. ; VG.
