Paperback. Condition: Good. There were multiple players in the European struggle for dominance of North America - Spain, France, England, and mostly forgotten today, although with a legacy in the place names of towns and kills (creeks, ) The Netherlands. The Dutch purchased Manhattan from the Indians in 1626, that famous twenty-four-dollar price tag, and gave it up to the British in 1664. The Dutch settled the Hudson Valley from New Amsterdam (today's Lower Manhattan) to Albany. North of Albany were some few scattered outposts, notably Saratoga and Schenectady, but mostly it was wilderness, the inhospitable (even to the Indians, ) Adirondack Mountains, a vast no-man's land separating the dominant North American empires, the English and the French. Those two powers would engage in a hundred-year struggle for control of the continent. With unimaginable courage, some few men dared venture into the wilderness where the dangers were abundant - wolves, snakes, and most terrifyingly, the Stone Age Indians, fighting with a savage fury to keep what had always been theirs. Men went for a myriad of reasons. For some, it was an escape from stultifying civilization, crude as it was. For others, a chance to get rich, smuggling and trapping. Others went to forget, or to escape, and few had any notion of what they were actually accomplishing - the opening of a continent. One of those men, going for the aforementioned reasons, is our indomitable eighteenth-century protagonist, Ken Kuyler, the Albany-born son of Dutch immigrants.…

"Combining unprecedented author access with frontline reporting, THE MARCH UP is the definitive account of the 22-day march to Baghdad during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Included in this edition is a new chapter by Bing West, who returned to Iraq in late summer 2003 to cover the Marines' activities after the march up until they handed their territory over to foreign troops, and returned home. Winner of the 2004 William E. Colby Award, the 2004 General Wallace M. Greene Award, a Washington Post Book World's Top Non-Fiction pick, and selected for the Marine Corps Commandment's Reading List, this updated edition continues to provide an unflinching account of war ""as only those who have fought it can describe it,"" as senator John McCain praised." Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First U.S. Edition Stated. 214 Pages. This is the 1971 First American Addition. Very attractive brand new condition book with black cloth and red quarter-spine with black lettering. Dust jacket flap price is $5.95 and is Very Good with a small puncture near the spine and edges show very minor wear. There were four passengers ready to be flown on the racecourse trip, in the new Cherokee Six 300: a large man with a face full of anger; a jockey, apparently angry, too, rigid with anger; an elderly man, Major Tyderman; and a woman, fifty and fragile-looking, the only one of the group not outwardly ruffled. When the plane's pilot went up to the group and introduced himself to the Major as Matt Shore, the Major wanted to know where the regular pilot was. "In Turkey," Matt said. The woman said the last time she'd flown to the races the pilot got lost. Matt promised they wouldn't get lost this time. Though he wasn't too sure of himself and the trip. Flying he could do, but race- course flying, taxi flying, steering yourself by railway lines and coming in on short landings were all new to him. He'd been an airline pilot, flying the big planes radar-vectored into Heathrow, and now, suddenly, he was all involved with racetracks and racing people-including England's champion jockey, Colin Ross, and Colin's sister Nancy, who, the first time she saw Matt, called him "a lousy, bloody skunk." It was all bewildering - and all too soon deadly dangerous. Smith, Jay J. - Jacket Design (illustrator).…
