Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Ziegler, Robert - Photographer (illustrator). First Printing. 51 Pages. April 1990 Edition. Light wear to cover edges. The period from 1880 to World War 2 changed the way we live. Mass production brought new way for distribution and marketing of goods. Middle managers, coordinated the flow of finished goods from headquarters located. America was transformed from a culture urging self-restraint to one built on immediate gratification through goods and pursuit of leisure time. This revolution in American values created choices for the new consumers that were foreign to their American heritage. Many of the demands were created by advertising agencies. This catalog of cigarette advertising called Smoke Signals considers that period economic growth through Richmond's cigarette industry. as a vehicle to explore the managerial and second industrial revolutions, the development of American advertising, and the transformation of American values. Tobacco was and remains important to Richmond. Tobacco was the bulwark of Virginia's economy for over two centuries and Richmond was the hub of the market before the Civil War. By the 1880s conservatism made Richmond business- men suspicious of new technology that they associated with urban materialism. Continuous-processing machinery, first used in agricultural processing industries such as tobacco, was rejected by local cigarette manufacturers unable to believe that a market existed for mass- produced cigarettes. Richmond's insular vision during this critical period of growth for the rest of the country dictated its economic future for much of the next century. Tobacco remained a central employer, but tobacco leadership and profits left the city forever. Contents: Foreword, Consultants, Lenders to the Exhibition, Acknowledgements, Introduction, Richmond and Tobacco, The Modern Corporation, Advertising Creating the American Mass Market, Transforming American Values, List of Illustrations, and Bibliography.

Georgia's Legacy: History Charted Through the Arts is just that: an exhibition attempting to show the direct correspondence between historical events in Georgia and the quality and quantity of indigenous decorative arts. Georgia's Legacy is a survey spanning Georgia's hesitant beginnings as a new colony to its cultural flowering in the 1850s. Many of these objects have been exhibited before, but always in a specific format rather than in an arrangement pointing to relationships with the overall history of Georgia's craft or fine art production.
