Red Cloth Hardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. No stated date but 1899. First edition. 150pp. and 10 pages of reviews of other works in the Famous Scots series. Top edge gilt. This is a biography of George Buchanan (1506-1582), a Scottish historian and humanist scholar. His ideology of resistance to royal usurpation ga…ined widespread acceptance during the Scottish Reformation. The greater part of the work was written by Robert Wallace (1831-1899), a British writer who had a varied career as a classics teacher, minister, university professor, newspaper editor, barrister and finally a Member of Parliament. It has been completed by John Campbell Smith (1828-1914), a Scottish writer, advocate and Sheriff-substitute of Forfarshire. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and front boards and a white and gold illustration on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear on the boards and slight fading to the spine. The bottom of the spine is lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean with browning to the free endpapers and an inscription on the half-title page that reads: "To J. Martin White Esq. a little memento of the living and the dead from J. Campbell Smith - Dundee Christmas 1899." The original yellow marker ribbon is present but faded and frayed at the end. Inscribed & Signed by J. Campb.
