Het bijbels epos 'Israëls Baälfegorsdienst' is de eerste zelfstandige publicatie van de Rotterdamse dichter Dirk Smits (1702 - 1752), en - bijvoorbeeld volgens Willem Kloos - volstrekt niet diens minste werk, omdat lezing ervan hem, Kloos, den dichter als een wezenlijk voortreffelijk kunstenaar kennen deed. Smits was de dragende figuur van het Rotterdamse dichtgenootschap 'Natura et Arte' (1726 - 1746); zijn medeleden (Willem van der Pot, Nikolaes Versteeg, Frans de Haes en Adriaen van der Vliet) zijn dan ook, mèt Arnold Hoogvliet en Joachim Oudaen, te vinden onder de lofdichters voorin het werk. Toen Dirk Smits in 1746 een beter betaalde betrekking in Hellevoetsluis aanvaardde, betekende dat het einde van het genootschap. Bijgebonden is Smits' vertaling van de inaugurele rede, waarmee Pieter Burman Secundus in 1742 het ambt van hoogleraar in de klassieke letteren aanvaardde aan het Amsterdamse atheneum. Onderwerp is de ware (klassieke) dichtkunst en daarom had Burman er de voorkeur aan gegeven te spreken in Latijnse verzen en zich zodoende als dichter, hoe goedt of kwaedt ook, te vertoonen, voornamelyk dewyl dees weg nog nooit op deze wys door iemandt voor my gebaent of betreden is. Smits kende geen Latijn, maar enkele vrienden van 'Natura et Arte' hadden hem een prozavertaling bezorgd, aan de hand waarvan hij zijn vertaling in versvorm maakte.
