Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Vintage 1957 First edition of noted Dutch physician Isadore Snapper's (1889-1973) classic study of bone diseases. This particular copy is from the library of the Yuma Testing Grounds in Yuma Arizona and bears several stamps to this effect: "Bone Diseases in Medical Practice", by Isadore S…napper, New York: Grune and Stratton, 1957, First edition, 229 pages copiously illustrated with plates at rear. Measures 7 1/2" X 10 3/4". Two stamps from the Yuma Proving Ground library in Yuma Arizona as well as a Library of Congress stamp. Shows wear with blemishing at right upper edge and library call numbers to spine from the Yuma Proving Grounds library, as well as old library pocket residue at rear inner board. Internally very good. "Isidore Snapper, an influential and highly regarded Dutch teacher and investigator, began his medical education at the University of Amsterdam in 1905. Under the guidance of Professor Pel, Snapper gained early exposure to experimental medicine as a fellow of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London for six months in 1909. After graduating in 1911, Snapper joined the enlightened service of physiologist H. J. Hamburger and internist-chemist Hijmans van den Bergh in Groningen, where he explored the relationships between physiological research and clinical medicine and wrote his thesis. When van den Bergh left Groningen in 1918, Snapper returned to Amsterdam where he promoted an interdisciplinary approach to medical research and discouraged over-specialization. His own studies centered on kidney metabolism, diabetes, and diseases of the skeleton." "Yuma Proving Ground traces its history to Camp Laguna and the Army Corps of Engineers Yuma Test Branch, both activated in 1943. Located on the Colorado River, the Yuma Test Branch conducted testing on combat bridges, amphibious vehicles, and boats. Tens of thousands of mechanized and infantry soldiers were trained at Camp Laguna for duty at combat fronts throughout the world, from North Africa to the South Pacific. Abandoned campsites and tank trails can still be found on the proving ground. Since its early days, Yuma Proving Ground has been a desert environmental test center for all types of military equipment and materiel. However, developmental and a variety of other types of testing of artillery systems and ammunition, aircraft armament and targeting systems, mobility equipment, and air delivery systems, not necessarily desert environmental-related, now comprise the bulk of the workload. A heavy investment in technology and a highly skilled soldier-civilian workforce makes the proving ground a significant social and economic component of the local community.".

Hardbound. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. The author was a Dutch-born physician who, in 1938, was assigned to pre-war Peiping [Beijing] by the Rockefeller Foundation as Head the Department of Medicine of the Peiping Union Medical College. While Dr. Snapper treated the same diseases that he had observed in Western patients…in past, his experience in north China at the time gave him the opportunity to observe the progression and treatment of these diseases among a population living under vastly different conditions with regard to exposure to other pathogens, as well as suffering under an extremely poor diet and hygiene environment. His observations during this period formed the basis of this detailed clinical report. Foxing on EPs as well as some foxing on first and last couple of pages of the book. Binding sound and internal pages otherwise clean and unmarked. Now rare. x, 380 pp., 137 b&w photos, index. Size: 24 x 16 cm.
