Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'Fifty Years of Psychic Research' is a comprehensive exploration of the supernatural and the unseen world, based on five decades of personal investigation and study by Joseph F. Snipes. The work delves into the various facets of spiritualism and parapsychology, documenting observations of mediumship, telepathy, and the survival of consciousness after death. Snipes provides a narrative that bridges the gap between skepticism and belief, offering a detailed account of the phenomena that shaped the spiritualist movement during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The book examines the methodologies used to study the psychic realm, reflecting on the historical context of psychical research and its quest for scientific legitimacy. It serves as an important record of an era's fascination with the occult and the systematic attempts to validate metaphysical experiences through empirical observation. Written with a focus on documenting evidence and personal experience, this work remains a significant contribution to the literature of the paranormal. It provides invaluable insight into the evolution of psychic studies and the enduring human quest to understand the mysteries of existence and the potential for life beyond the physical body. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. [Date from the copyright page.] Frontispiece Portrait plus three more; 483 pages. The attractive deep-red cloth is is very good, with spine ends and corner tips rubbed with some fraying. Gilt lettering on spine and upper board is clearly discernible. [Please see my five images of the actual book.] Top edge gilt. All four portrait plates are excellent. Interior leaves are clean and unmarked, though gently toned throughout, with toning to both free endpapers. The front hinge is superficially cracked, pulling slightly at the top, but binding remains strong. A smart label from 'Dale News, Inc. / Lily Dale, N.Y.' appears on the front free endpaper. (Lily Dale is a hamlet in southwestern New York that still serves as a meeting place for spiritualists and freethinkers.) This is a fascinating account, drawing from stories and reports from 1873 to 1915, compiled by the founder of the New York Psychical Society. From the preface: "Does not reason deny the need of a wandering shapeless consciousness searching for human embodiment? Do not the spiritual facts prove continual opportunity and desire for progress? Should they not convince us that the bottom is knocked out of the bottomless, that the future life is but another free gift, that the Omnipotent Father is not a pitiless Warden of an eternal prison, that the resurrection of all bodies of the past, present and future, does not depend upon the blast of a Gabriel horn for orderly huddling of human bones after indefinite ages of delay and decay?" As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly with tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking.
