Sheet Music First Edition
Albert Wilfred Barbelle (illustrator). Original large-format Tin Pan Alley sheet music featuring an elegant Albert Wilfred Barbelle cover illustration depicting a fashionable Jazz Age woman and seated suitor rendered in muted green and sepia tones. The composition is a classic Barbelle romantic cover - stylized, theatrical, and immediately recognizable to collectors of 1920s American popular music ephemera. Rear cover advertisements include contemporary Waterson, Berlin & Snyder hits such as Come On Spark Plug and Covered Wagon Days, helping firmly establish the piece within its original publication period. Condition is Very Good. Light edge wear and mild age toning consistent with handling; small corner creases and a few short closed edge tears not affecting text or music. Interior pages remain clean and supple with no major separations or losses. Colors on the front cover remain especially attractive, with the delicate muted palette and line work retaining strong display appeal uncommon in fragile 1920s sheet music. Edition/Printing: Presumed first edition / early commercial printing, 1924 issue. Copyright lines show both MCMXXIV and Canadian copyright notices without later reissue indicators. Publisher imprint, period advertising, and plate number '1406-8' are consistent with an original release-state commercial printing rather than a later reprint. Albert Wilfred Barbelle (1887-1957) was among the most celebrated illustrators of Tin Pan Alley sheet music during the 1910s-1930s. His sophisticated depictions of fashionable women, theatrical romance, and Art Deco-influenced design became synonymous with Jazz Age popular culture, and his signed covers remain highly sought after by collectors today. Lyricist Roy Turk (1892-1934) wrote numerous standards of the era, while Ted Snyder (1881-1965) was one of Tin Pan Alley's major publishers and composers. Fred E. Ahlert (1892-1953) later became known for standards including Mean to Me and I Don't Know Why (I Just Do). Waterson, Berlin & Snyder Co. was one of the dominant New York music publishers of the 1910s and 1920s, closely associated with Irving Berlin and the commercialization of American popular song during the phonograph and radio boom years. Their publications are especially collectible when paired with notable cover artists such as Barbelle.
