Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Hardcover 1st edition. Light blue-grey boards with black titles on spine. No DJ. A clean and sturdy copy with only very minor shelfwear and a gift inscription on the FFEP. A Pictorial History of Burlesque was published in 1956, first by G.P. Putnam's Sons and simultaneousl…y in a Bonanza Books edition. It runs to 194 pages and is illustrated throughout with black and white photographs drawn substantially from the collections of the New York Public Library, the Museum of the City of New York, and the Culver Service. The large octavo format — roughly eight by ten and a quarter inches — is designed to show the photographs to advantage, and the illustrations are the book's primary currency. The history Sobel traces begins with the origins of burlesque as theatrical parody in nineteenth-century Britain, in which grand subjects — opera, classical mythology, serious drama — were subjected to comic deflation and broad physical humour. The arrival of Lydia Thompson and her British Blondes in New York in 1868 is treated as the pivotal moment at which burlesque crossed the Atlantic and began its transformation into a distinctly American form. Thompson's company introduced tights, blonde wigs, and a style of female performance that was simultaneously comic and provocative, generating enormous popular enthusiasm and considerable moral alarm — a combination that would define American burlesque for the following eighty years. From this point Sobel traces the form's evolution through the extravaganza era, the development of the olio format, the rise of honky-tonk and hootch dancing, and the emergence of the striptease as the dominant feature of twentieth-century burlesque. The gallery of figures who pass through the book is considerable: Michael Leavitt, the producer who systematized burlesque touring; Little Egypt, whose performances at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition became one of the period's most discussed scandals; Eddie Cantor, Fanny Brice, Bert Lahr, and Bobby Clark, all of whom used burlesque as a training ground before moving into vaudeville and legitimate theatre; and Gypsy Rose Lee, whose elevation of the striptease into something approaching performance art represented the form's final flowering. The Minsky family — Billy, Abe, Herbert, and Morton — receive particular attention as the producers most associated with New York burlesque in the 1920s and 1930s, whose running battles with civic authorities became a theatrical institution in their own right. The eventual banning of burlesque in New York City by Mayor Fiorello La Guardia in 1937 is treated as the beginning of the end, though Sobel documents the form's continued life in other American cities through the 1940s and into the 1950s. Sobel closes with an elegiac assessment of burlesque as a form that, like vaudeville before it, had run its course — a conclusion that subsequent decades, with the revival of neo-burlesque as a performance art movement, would considerably complicate. The book remains the standard pictorial reference on the subject, valued by theatre historians, collectors of performing arts ephemera, and anyone interested in the social history of popular entertainment in America.
