Contact seller4-star sellerGood. Large repaired tear from upper border, center, extending about 2/5 into the image. Size 22 x 32 Inches. This is an 1891 William Heysham Overend and Lionel Percy Smythe view of an English football (soccer) match. This is one of the earliest images of soccer / football after the 1888 founding of the British Football League.…The view captures the moment when the keeper (goalie) for the 'white shirt' team is about to (hopefully) throw the ball to one of his teammates. Association Game Subtitled 'Association Game', this references the Football Association, founded in 1863. The Association still governs football in England. Publication History and Census This scene was painted by W. H. Overend and L. P. Smythe in 1890 and published as a photogravure print by the Fine Art Society Limited on April 2nd, 1891. It is not cataloged in OCLC and we are aware of only one other example in private hands.
