Ausbildung in Basel, Würzburg, Prag, Wien, später auch in Paris und London. 1857 in Würzburg promoviert, habilitierte er sich 1861 in Basel, wurde daselbst 1862 Prof. e. o. und 1864 Prof. ord. der Chirurgie. Mit geringen Unterbrechungen infolge seiner Thätigkeit 1866 in den österreich. Lazaretten von Verona und von Anfang Aug. bis Nov. 1870 in den Reservelazaretten von Karlsruhe, wirkte Socin hier bis zu seinem 19. Jan. 1899 erfolgten Ableben. Eine ehrenvolle Berufung nach Würzburg hatte er abgelehnt. Socin hat als Prof., Spitalchirurg, Operateur und Forscher gleich bedeutendes geleistet. Zunächst hat er um die Hebung des chir. Unterrichtes in Basel ein grosses Verdienst sich erworben. Mit Energie und Geschick wusste er eine Reihe segensreicher Reformen einzuführen, besonders nachdem 1868 die alten Räume seiner Klinik durch Anbauung eines nördlichen Spitalflügels wesentlich erweitert worden waren. Schon Mitte der 60er Jahre führte er die antisept. Wundbehandlung ein und machte dadurch seine Klinik zu einer Musteranstalt. Als Lehrer fesselte er durch klare und prächtig abgerundete Vorträge. Er war ein scharfsinniger Diagnostiker und gewandter, kühner, dabei doch vorsichtiger Operateur. Seine wissenschaftl. Leistungen bewegten sich hauptsächlich auf dem Gebiet der Kriegschirurgie. In Betracht kommen hierfür besonders die "Kriegschir. Erfahrungen" (ges. in Karlsruhe 1870 bis 71, erschienen 1872). Ausserdem publizierte er "Erkrankungen der Prostata" (in Pitha-Billroth's Handb. der allg. u. spez. Chir.). Den gleichen Gegenstand sollte er für die "Deutsche Chir." bearbeiten, doch ist das Manuskript unvollendet geblieben. Ausserdem rühren von S. noch her, abgesehen von zahlreichen kleineren Vorträgen, Aufsätzen und Mitteilungen, die "Jahresberichte" seiner Abteilung, in denen er die Berichte über seine kriegschir. Erfahrungen fortsetzte und die eine Fundgrube für interessante Neuerungen bilden. Im einzelnen hat S. die Radikaloperationen der Hernien, Resektionen, Anastomosenbildungen an Magen und Darm, Enukleation der Kröpfe durch Modifikation der Methoden bereichert. Er war Mitbegründer und hervorragendes Mitglied der D. Ges. f. Chir. wie auch des Pariser Congrès de chir., auch an den ärztl. Vereinsbestrebungen seiner engeren Heimat eifrig beteiligt; so förderte er den ärztl. Zentralverein der Schweiz und die med. Ges. von Basel, die er 1860 mit begründen half und in der er nicht weniger als 57 mal Vorträge gehalten hat. Ferner bethätigte er sich an den Bestrebungen des "Roten Kreuzes" und gründete einen "Verein für Beschaffung künstlicher Glieder"." Pagel, Biogr. Lex. (1901), Sp.1614-1616.
