Quarto, publisher's stiff textured wrappers, presentation description to half-title, 70 pp, 24 leaves of plates, a very good copy. Scarce. Anders Sparrman joined Cook's second voyage at the Cape of Good Hope, and served as assistant naturalist to Johann Reinhold and Georg Forster. This well illustrated monograph presents the collection of artefacts collected by Sparrman in the Pacific - one of the earliest such collections assembled by a European, and therefore of prime importance to our understanding of the development of Polynesian material cultures. The collection, now housed in the Ethnographical Museum of Sweden, includes objects fromNew Zealand, the Friendly Isles (Tonga),Tahiti, New Hebrides, New Caledonia and the Marquesas.
