Juan José Suárez Coppel is a Mexican economist. He was a director-general of PEMEX, the state-owned government-granted monopoly in Mexico's petroleum industry. Coppel is a graduate of the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México in Mexico City, and earned his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago. He has taught economics at several leading universities in Mexico, Europe and at Brown University the United States. Dr. Jorge Soberón is mainly interested in documenting and understanding large-scale spatial patterns in the biodiversity of terrestrial species. He was born in Mexico, where he was educated as a biologist at the National University of Mexico. He earned his Master's degree there, and then a Ph.D. at Imperial College, in London. Back in Mexico, in 1983, he worked at the National University for ten years, and then I was seconded to the national biodiversity agency (CONABIO), where he served as executive secretary for 13 years. Then in 2005 he moved to the University of Kansas, to work as scientist and a teacher. José Sarukhán Kermez (born 15 July 1940) is a plant biologist and ecologist. He is currently the National Coordinator for Mexico's National Commission for Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (CONABIO). He received a B.A. from National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1964, a Masters from Postgraduate College (Chapingo), and a Ph.D. (Ecology) from the University of Wales. A known expert in the biodiversity of Mexico, Sarukhán's main interests include tropical ecology, plant population ecology, and the systems ecology of both temperate and tropical ecosystems, as well as training and education. He has published over 110 research papers and authored and co-authored several books. He received the 2017 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement. José Sarukhán Kermez is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award (Champions of the Earth) in 2016. Javier de la Maza was a specialist in taxonomy and biogeography of Mexican butterflies, he worked for more than 40 years in the preservation of Mexico's biodiversity, especially in the conservation of the Lacandona Jungle. Javier studied biology at the UNAM Faculty of Sciences. His extraordinary work capacity allowed him to be Head, from 1979 to 1982, of the Habitat Conservation Office in the General Directorate of Wildlife of the then Ministry of Agriculture and Hydraulic Resources; while from 1979 to 1985 he was President of the Mexican Society of Lepidopterology. From 1982 to 1985 he was Director of Ecological and Biosphere Reserves at SEDUE and in 1986 Director of the Monarca Mexico Civil Association. In 2005 he co-founded Natura y Ecosistemas Mexicanos (also known as Natura Mexicana) and since then he has been its General Director.
