Warsaw: Niezale?ny Samorz?dny Zwi?zek Zawodowy "Solidarno??", 1981. Horizontally folded newsprint (51 × 36 cm); 16 pp. each. A very good set. Complete run of the influential Polish newspaper of the Solidarity movement (editor-in-chief Tadeusz Mazowiecki), issued between April 3 and December 13, 1981, despite being banned on April 13 of the same year. The paper finally ceased publication after the government imposed martial law in an attempt to suppress the Solidarno?? trade union, which had garnered increasing support among the population. This set includes all 37 issues, as well as the special supplement to double issue 38-39, which was confiscated (containing a history of Poland after WWII by Krystyna Kersten). Only after June 1989 did the newspaper resume publication legally. Though the journal was officially subject to censorial oversight, its immense popularity allowed the editors to broach subjects that were previously not seen in print. Contributions by some of the best Polish journalists helped create a forum for rethinking twentieth-century history, interviews with leading intellectuals, and, not least, ongoing coverage of the Solidarno?? Union and strike movement's activities.
