This is the second edition (first 1538) of the Solinus and the Mela cosmographies, both classical texts of geography with commentary by Petrus Johanus Olivarius and edited by Sebastian Münster, printed by Isinger. This atlas in its first edition precedes Münster's own Ptolemy Geography (1540) and Cos…mography (1545). The Solinus map of Asia (Burden 11, state 2) is one of the first, dedicated exclusively to the continent. The map also shows the north-west of the American continent: Terra incognita. This is the earliest representation of the NW coast of America on a printed map (Burden).

Bll., 12 Bll., mit Holzschnitt-Titelbordüre von Anton Woensam Neueres Halb-Pergament, Deckel mit Inkunabelpapierbezug "VD 16 S 6964; Schweiger II, 959; Merlo, Woensam 425. - Schöner Kölner Druck, die Titelbordüre, mit der Enthauptung Johannes des Täufers in der Unterleiste, ist eine Kopie nach… H. Holbein. Eine grössere, schwarzgrundige Initiale "C" mit Drachen und kniendem Kind mit Schwert wohl auch von Woensam (nicht bei Merlo). - Gaius Julius Solinus war ein spätantiker Kompilator, der vor allem die Werke von Plinius und Pomponius Mela benutzte, aber wohl auch Quellen exzerpierte, die uns verloren sind. Sei "Polyhistor" genanntes Kompendium trägt manchmal auch die Titel "De mirabilibus mundi" oder "Collectanea rerum memorabilium". Es behandelt merkwürdige Ereignisse und Naturphänomene, Tiere, Fabelwesen, Astrologie etc. Besonders einflussreich war auch das Kapitel über die Eigenschaften verschiedener Steine (vgl. dazu Thorndike I, 326 ff.). " - Titel mit kleinem altem Besitzvermerk und kleiner Notiz zum Autor, sonst wenig gebräunt, sauber, schönes Exemplar.
