Giacomo Mansù (illustrator). DESCRIPTION: Translated by Edward Watling. Small folio 15 x 10 7/8 inches ,380 x 275 mm, (sheets), 96 pages. No. 41 of 105 copies printed on Magnani di Pescia mould-made paper, total edition of 114. Contents consist of groupings of interleaved folded sheets stacked loosely within a binding of gilt-lettered green morocco over creme-coloured Linson paper over boards with a bas-relief medallion of Oedipus's head on front cover designed by Manzù. Printed on the handpress by Giovanni Mardersteig at the Officina Bodoni for the Racolin Press, New York. Illustrated with seven full-page etchings by Manzù. Binding with loose folded sheets housed in a clamshell box with paper labels on front cover and spine. Signed by Manzù in the colophon. Binding protected with an archival clear Grafix Dura Lar dust wrapper._____ CONDITION: Folded sheets, binding and clamshell box all in fine condition. No markings, ex-libris, etc._____ DISCUSSION: After two failed attempts at a collaboration in which Manzù rejected the poems under consideration for his illustrations, Mardersteig noticed Mansù's sketches for costumes and decor for Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex, which included "a magnificent metre-high relief of the head of Oedipus." Mardersteig then asked Mansù to illustrate an edition of Sophocles's tragedy using the high-relief image to become the frst etching as well as the relief image on the front binding cover. This is one of the finest Officina Bodoni editions and one of the scarcest._____ NOTE: International shipping cost using USPS International Priority EXPRESS Mail with tracking to most locations in the United Kingdom and Europe is $100 U.S. dollars. Shipping cost to more distant locations may incur additional cost.
