Rivoluzionario in Germania nel 1848-1849, comunista, amico e compagno di Karl Marx e Friedrich Engels, Friedrich Adolph Sorge emigra negli Stati Uniti nel 1852 e trascorre il resto della vita nel Nuovo Mondo, quotidianamente impegnato nelle lotte che conduce il movimento operaio della esordiente potenza industriale. Il ruolo che Sorge fa suo per quasi mezzo secolo è quello, suggerito da Engels, di «schierarsi per ogni vero movimento generale della classe operaia, accettare il suo effettivo punto di partenza come tale e portarlo piano piano all'altezza teorica dimostrando come ogni errore commesso, ogni sconfitta subita siano conseguenza necessaria di opinioni teoriche sbagliate nel programma originario». Tra il 1890 e il 1895 Sorge ripercorre, in una serie di articoli sulla «Neue Zeit», le vicende del movimento operaio americano dal 1783 al 1892, compiendo il primo tentativo coerente di scriverne una storia scientifica e meritando l'elogio di Engels: «Gli articoli sono quanto di meglio e tutto ciò che di autentico noi abbiamo sul movimento americano». Er floh vor den preussischen Truppen im Frühjahr 1849 in die Schweiz. Zur Zeit der Reichsverfassungskampagne hielt er sich in Baden auf, wo er sich August Willich und seinen Freiwilligen anschloss. Während dieser Kämpfe der badischen Revolution begegnete er 1849 auch Johann Philipp Becker und Friedrich Engels. Wieder floh er in die Schweiz und reiste nach Genf. Hier traf er mit Wilhelm Liebknecht zusammen. Nachdem er 1851 die Schweiz verlassen musste, ging er nach Belgien. 1852 reiste er nach London weiter, wo er 1852 Karl Marx besuchte.?
