Rivoluzionario in Germania nel 1848-1849, comunista, amico e compagno di Karl Marx e Friedrich Engels, Friedrich Adolph Sorge emigra negli Stati Uniti nel 1852 e trascorre il resto della vita nel Nuovo Mondo, quotidianamente impegnato nelle lotte che conduce il movimento operaio della esordiente potenza industriale. Il ruolo che Sorge fa suo per quasi mezzo secolo è quello, suggerito da Engels, di «schierarsi per ogni vero movimento generale della classe operaia, accettare il suo effettivo punto di partenza come tale e portarlo piano piano all'altezza teorica dimostrando come ogni errore commesso, ogni sconfitta subita siano conseguenza necessaria di opinioni teoriche sbagliate nel programma originario». Tra il 1890 e il 1895 Sorge ripercorre, in una serie di articoli sulla «Neue Zeit», le vicende del movimento operaio americano dal 1783 al 1892, compiendo il primo tentativo coerente di scriverne una storia scientifica e meritando l'elogio di Engels: «Gli articoli sono quanto di meglio e tutto ciò che di autentico noi abbiamo sul movimento americano».
