stiff paper wrappers. Bookbinding (illustrator). 4to. stiff paper wrappers. 315+(1); 404; 430 pages. Three volumes. First volume limited to 1,500 copies, of which 500 were for sale; second volume limited to 2,000 copies, with 1,000 for sale; third volume limited to 1,000 copies. Minor wear to spines, else condition of this complete set. Antiquarian catalogues for "la haute bibliophilie" (III-5), i.e., exhibition/sale catalogues for three collections of Belgian bindings assembled by the antiquarian "Expert-Libraire" E. Speeckaert and exhibited in Speeckaert's own establishment (1989) or on the premises of the Bibliotheca Wittockiana (1993/1998-99). The majority of the bindings are from the 18th and 19th centuries, though there are also many older items. Vols. II and III were compiled by Sorgeloos, vol. I by Paul Culot. Listed are 144/185/190 bindings in volumes I-III respectively. 750+ illustrations in all. All volumes follow the same format: a black-and-white or color photograph of a binding (generally front cover and backing) appears on the left-hand side with text of the entry for that binding on the facing page. Entries identify binder when known, describe the binding, indicate contents (author, title, publisher), and discuss such things as style of decoration, provenance, information relating to the binder or various former owners, and other matters not necessarily restricted to binding. References may be given, and a binder's ticket is occasionally reproduced below the text. Preliminary sections of about twenty separate color illustrations in each volume offer additional views of covers of catalogue items, plus some endpapers and decorated edges. Insides of covers bear reproductions of Belgian binders' tickets (different for each volume).

Buch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The twenty-two essays in this volume are contributed by Belgian, French, and American scholars to honor the memory and work of Adrienne Fontainas (1929-2010). The interdisciplinary scholarship this community of international scholars has produced is of lasting importance in underlining the significant role of Brussels from 1870 to 1914. A leading European scholar and bibliophile, Adrienne Fontainas served as Vice President of the International Association of Bibliophiles and membre d'honneur of the Royal Society of Bibliophiles and Iconophiles of Belgium. Her groundbreaking books on the Symbolist poet Stéphane Mallarmé and his Brussels' editor Edmond Deman (Edmond Deman éditeur : Art et édition au tournant du siècle and Edmond Deman : Publications de la librairie) are model studies of the book publishing trade in France and Belgium. The essays in this book explore a wide variety of interdisciplinary fields, including art history, book collecting, publishing, literature and music, and cover subjects such as Félicien Rops, William Degouve de Nuncques, Symbolism and Surrealism, Maurice Maeterlinck and Émile Verhaeren, Paul Signac, Victor Horta, Edmond Picard, André Fontainas, Edmond Deman, and Franz Liszt in Belgium. In addition, a comprehensive bibliography of Adrienne Fontainas' writings in the visual arts, literature, and music, as well as a discussion of her working methodology, are included. This book contains contributions in French and English.

4to, original printed card covers. 155, (3) pages; illustrated. Fine. Chalon is best known today for his role in the Fortsas hoax in 1840, which involved an obscure auction sale consisting exclusively of "unique" works unknown in the standard bibliographies, which had been dreamed up by Chalon to appeal to particular book collectors of the dayall of whom managed to learn about the sale and many of whom fell for it. His numismatic works focus mostly on medieval issues of the Low Counties, a subject on which he published hundreds of articles. His few book-length works are generally quite rare though still cited.
