First and only edition. Southack specialized in insurance fraud, but was also involved in prostitution and other criminal activities. In 1803 he scuttled his own ship to claim the insurance, but was caught and sent to the clink. This experience led him, wonderfully, to become a leading voice in prison reform. A good bit of underworld detail accompanies the story of his rise to righteousness. Stab sewn in original blue paper wraps. Tears on a few pages, but no loss of text. 17 cm. 119 pp.
