Kleinhard del. 1772", unten rechts "J. K. Balzer sc. exc. Pragae" Repräsentatives Ärzte- und Gelehrtenporträt als Einzelblatt, vermutlich Teil einer Serie medizinischer Porträts, für Sammler- und Albumzwecke sowie zur biographischen Illustration in gelehrten Kreisen bestimmt. Span von Spanau ist als Halbfigur in einer steinernen Ädikulanische dargestellt, die ihn wie eine Grab- oder Ehrennische rahmt und seinen Rang als Gelehrter betont. Der reich verzierte Wams mit Knopfleiste und das übergeworfene Tuch erinnern an frühbarocke Gelehrtenmode und geben der Figur eine historisierende Würde, während die ruhig auf der Brüstung gefalteten Hände Gelehrsamkeit und Besonnenheit signalisieren. Das Wappenmedaillon in der Mitte der Brüstung verweist auf adelige Herkunft bzw. Standesbewusstsein; die lateinische Legende fasst Name und medizinischen Doktorgrad zusammen und macht das Blatt zugleich zum gelehrten Titelporträt. Johann Karl Balzer, in Prag tätig, spezialisierte sich auf Porträt- und Reproduktionsstiche und arbeitete häufig nach Zeichnungen Johann Kleinhards. Laurentius Span von Spanau (Lebensdaten nicht sicher erschließbar) war ein Arzt der Frühen Neuzeit, der in zeitgenössischen Quellen als "Med. Doct." erscheint und wahrscheinlich im böhmisch-österreichischen Raum tätig war. Die Kombination aus lateinischer Legende und repräsentativem Kupferstichporträt legt nahe, dass er eine überregionale fachliche Stellung innehatte, möglicherweise als Stadt- oder Hofarzt; konkrete Stationen seiner Ausbildung und Praxis sind jedoch bislang kaum dokumentiert. Das erhaltene Porträt bezeugt immerhin seine Einbindung in die gelehrte Erinnerungskultur des 18. Jahrhunderts, in der Ärzte und Professoren durch druckgraphische Bildnisse geehrt wurden. Das Blatt von Balzer und Kleinhard ist ein Beispiel für die spätbarocke Porträtgraphik Prags und dokumentiert die Vernetzung medizinischer Eliten mit der dortigen Kunstproduktion. Für die Medizingeschichte ist es als selten überliefertes Bildnis eines heute wenig bekannten Arztes wichtig, das zugleich die Typik der ärztlichen Repräsentation in der Druckgrafik des 18.
