Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm vinyl record album "Lent for Promotional Use Only," Mango 539 863-1, near-mint vinyl in near-mint cardboard jacket, includes "Civilization," "Garvey," "My Roots," "Take A Look," "Great Men," "African Woman," "Mek…We Dweet" and of course "Mek We Dweet in Dub." (In fact, if you've ever wondered, this "Lent For Promotional Use Only" is an empty bluff. Once this record was mailed out -- they were virtually always unsolicited -- to a radio station, it became the property of said radio station to dispose of as it pleased (other than REPRODUCING new copies) In January of 2011, NPR reports, "The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco upheld a lower court's decision that the sale of so-called promo records -- usually advance copies of new releases sent to music critics and radio stations by record labels -- does NOT violate copyright laws.") The Burning Band includes Paul Beckford bass, Nelson Miller drums, Lenford Richards lede guitar, piano, funde; Linvall Jarrett rhythm guitar, Alvin Haughton, percussion. There's also quite a bit of brass (saxes, trumpet, trombone) in this LP, recorded at Tuff Gong Studios, Kingston, Jamaica. Reduced from $15. Photography by Deborah Feingold (illustrator).

Not books but two, 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm vinyl record albums, Island Records / Mango 537-840-0 (Tippa Irie & Peter Spence) and Mango 537-844-0 DJ (Burning Spear.) The Tippa Irie vinyl is mint; the Burning Spear vinyl is near mint. Both these LPs are from the year 1990, and b…oth come in multicolored, generic Mango Records cardboard sleeves. That is to say, while both these cardboard jackets -- die-cut to allow the disc labels to be viewed -- state "mango" in mint green on a purple background to one side, and again in red to an orange background on the other side, they are identical; they are not individualized to the vinyl disc in question via a photographic image of the performer, or anything of the sort. The Burning Spear offering "Great Men," is a DJ "Promotional" copy from the Mango album "Mek We Sweet," but for whatever reason priced out as the lesser value of these two when we first listed, with a median market value of $10, while the bulk of the value here lies in the Tippa Irie / Peter Spence disc, offering multiple different mixes of "Girl of My Best Friend," credited to B. Ross/S. Bobrick, published by Elvis Presley Music (BMI.) The pair of LPs now reduced from $52.
