Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Carlo Fontana (1634-1714) was a Roman artist of the late Baroque era. Apprentice of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, he was an urbanist, an engineer, an architect and a thinker. The present opus is his most famous work, which is known to be created in 1676 but published in the final version in 1696. It is a book that describes the water supply, including the engineering constructions as pipes, aqueducts, cisterns, and fountains. The engravings based on the Fontana drawings were made by Alessandro Specchi (1668-1729), a papal architect and engraver. Serving as a principe of the St. Luke`s Academy in Rome Carlo Fontana remains well known as a prominent teacher. The illustrated book on hydraulics and hydrostatics was probably in wide use as a textbook for his famous students. The fountain systems described in the book became popular among the architects of European villas, especially in France. The provenance inscription on the flyleaf notes that the book was sold at Dr. Mead`s Sale on April 28th 1755. And belonged to James Williamson in 1894. Text in Italian.
