Speiser's work in group theory included the classification of finite simple groups of order up to 200. He also worked on the theory of algebraic functions and the theory of Riemann surfaces. In addition to his mathematical work, Speiser was deeply interested in the philosophy of mathematics. He was influenced by the ideas of the German philosopher and mathematician Gottlob Frege, and he wrote extensively on the philosophical foundations of mathematics.
