Named one of Rough Trades Best Books of 2013According to Gandhi, the Four Stages of Protest are as follows: First they ignore you. Then they ridicule you. Then they fight you. Then you win!In Fight the Power!, comics authors Sean Michael Wilson and Benjamin Dickson team up with illustrators Hunt Emerson, John Spelling, and Adam Pasion to show how this process has been played out again and again throughout history--and has slowly but surely led to hard-won rights for the people along the way. Focusing on the English-speaking nations, Wilson and Dickson chronicle the struggles of the Luddites and Swing Riots in the early 1800s, through the Irish Rebellions that lasted through 1922; from the suffragettes in 1918 to Rosa Parks and the bus boycott of the mid-1950s; from the trial of Nelson Mandela to the Occupy movement that has only just begun. By illuminating the variety of protests--and the valuable connections among them--through an accessible art form, Fight the Power! shows that there is a point to the struggle, fight by fight, win by win.

He refers to a letter he is forwarding (not present) from "one of our active members . [forwarding it] as duty bound to the Editor. It seems a proper contribution on one of our open questions. | I wish a larger proportion of our leading names appeared among the contributors to the 'Reformer'. | Ther are many men who never write unless they are asked . and some who will only write if they are told that a contribution on some particular subject will be acceptable from them. . if I might suggest your applying a gentle editorial pressure upon them. I fancy too by what I hear from various quarters that a larger proportion of lively articles are desiderated. | I have begun something upon 'poor letter H.'".

Art / Print / Poster First Edition
Condition: Very Good. Anderson, IN: Standard Print, ca. 1859. Illustrated broadside (30.5x13.5cm.); printed in various attractive display types and adorned with two woodcut vignettes of the pump. Offered together with small printed handbill testimonial (10.5x17cm.) dated Washington City [Indiana], Jan. 25, 1859, and signed in type by Republican Indiana congressman David Kilgore. The former a bit toned and faintly damp stained, the latter with very faint finger soiling and contemporary pressure-stamp, else both Very Good and fresh. The larger broadside includes testimonials by various Indiana doctors, engineers, and other illustrious figures, promising that even "a boy six years of age can work it." David Kilgore's testimonial has less to do with the pump itself than the reputation of the men who praise it on the broadside, describing them all as "gentlemen of good repute, and in whose statement I have the most impartial confidence." We find no copies separately catalogued in OCLC at time of writing.
